Preceding her highly awaited comeback in “Marvel Zombies,” Wanda Maximoff’s Scarlet Witch is envisioned making a return to live-action in this grim Marvel Cinematic Universe depiction. Elizabeth Olsen initially embodied Wanda Maximoff in the 2015 film, “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” However, over the past ten years, she has undergone significant transformations. She has experienced deep sorrow due to the demise of her brother, Pietro Maximoff, her partner, Vision, and eventually her own mental stability and life as a result of the Darkhold. A potential new development could now be in store for the Scarlet Witch.
Introducing the Scarlet Witch in a zombie form was first seen in season 1 of “What If…?”, infected with Janet van Dyne’s Quantum Virus, and this powerful villain is set to return in the 2025 Marvel Zombies series. A depiction of this undead Scarlet Witch has been imaginatively portrayed in new fan art by @bosslogic on Instagram. Given that upcoming Marvel projects like Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars delve into the multiverse, it seems ideal for the live-action version of this zombified Scarlet Witch to make her first appearance.
How the Scarlet Witch Can Return to the MCU Despite Her Death
It’s quite plausible that the MCU might introduce an alternate universe version of the Scarlet Witch, as Elizabeth Olsen’s character in Earth 616 was killed off in the 2022 film “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” Wanda Maximoff caused chaos across multiple universes before giving up her life to destroy the Darkhold and Mount Wundagore, thus preventing others from misusing its dark magic. This death was made official in the 2024 release “Agatha All Along,” but given her immense power as a Nexus Being, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to expect her resurrection in future MCU storylines.
Following the consequences of ‘House of M’ and ‘Decimation’ in Marvel Comics, a remorseful Wanda Maximoff withdrew from society. The Young Avengers, with Magneto’s assistance, eventually located her, but not as herself – she was an amnesiac residing in Latveria, married to Doctor Doom. Doom aimed to exploit the Scarlet Witch’s powers for his own gain, making it plausible that this narrative might unfold during Phase 6 of the MCU. It would indeed be thrilling if Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch and Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom were to reunite in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Secret Wars’.
Doctor Doom, known for his magic skills in Marvel Comics, might have devised a method to bring back the Scarlet Witch, either to gain her powers or reinstate the Darkhold. The sudden red flash in “Multiverse of Madness” fueled speculations that the Scarlet Witch didn’t perish but was transported to an unknown location instead. There are rumors suggesting a zombie version of Scarlet Witch might appear in Phase 6 based on the comics series “Marvel Zombies”. However, many fans are eagerly anticipating Elizabeth Olsen’s return to reprise her role as the original and popular Scarlet Witch in the MCU.
