As a professional who delves into both the film industry and theme park realm, I can’t help but get excited when these two interests intersect. Whenever films are adapted from theme park attractions, I’m always intrigued. Thus, when news broke several years ago that Scarlett Johansson would star in and produce a movie based on Disney World’s Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, my interest was piqued. However, despite the initial announcement, no progress has been made so far.
After the announcement of the film, we were left in the dark for two years. Following the resolution of the WGA Writers’ Strike, Johansson shared that production was resuming, but then things went quiet once more. At that point, I thought the entire project had slipped into another realm and vanished into the Twilight Zone itself. However, in a recent conversation with Entertainment Weekly, the actress and producer appears optimistic about the movie’s future, stating it’s “coming together,” though she acknowledges there have been challenges. She elaborates on these obstacles by saying:
This aspect adds to the enigma of the journey. Working on it has been an enjoyable challenge, as it’s a fresh idea without boundaries. It’s indeed been challenging, like trying to solve a complex puzzle. But, we’re confident that we’ll unravel its secrets. It’s coming together nicely!
If Johansson wasn’t actively working on the movie, she likely would have made that clear. So, considering her excitement, it seems reasonable to believe her statements. Additionally, kudos to Scarlett for using the term “blue sky” project – a phrase often used in Walt Disney Imagineering to refer to the initial stages of development for entirely new attractions.
I won’t shy away from acknowledging that not all films derived from theme park attractions have shone brightly, but I remain optimistic about their prospects. That’s why I’m just as eager as anyone to learn more about the ongoing development of the Tower of Terror movie. As for the delay in its release, Johansson suggests that it’s been challenging due to the fact that while the Tower of Terror does have a narrative, it lacks a fully fleshed-out one. She elaborated…
This challenge might be more difficult than you anticipate. There are hidden complexities involved, but it’s not particularly thick or overwhelming; rather, it’s a delicate balance that requires careful navigation.
To put it simply, her assertion isn’t off base. The narrative, much like other theme park attraction stories, seems rather slim. It presents the Hollywood Tower Hotel, a luxurious establishment frequented by celebrities in 1939. On a stormy evening, a lightning bolt hits an elevator carrying five individuals, leading to a significant part of the hotel vanishing and transporting them into… the realm of The Twilight Zone.
Working with limited material can be challenging, yet it provides ample opportunities for screenwriters to unleash their creativity in crafting their desired narrative. Remarkably, some of the best films inspired by theme park rides, such as Pirates of the Caribbean and Jungle Cruise, have successfully transformed the attraction’s setting into a canvas for telling entirely new stories.
The potential problem could be that the Tower of Terror is overflowing with narrative elements. There are additional details such as specific characters that the movie might need if it aims for maximum accuracy in relation to the ride. Crafting a captivating story around these characters and the environment becomes crucial next.
It was considered a smart move to produce a film based on the “Tower of Terror”, and since Scarlett Johansson and her team are still working on it, they likely see some promise in it. However, it seems like the story isn’t quite finished yet, so we might need to be patient before we can finally watch it.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but express my excitement about Disney’s ongoing commitment to projects inspired by their iconic rides, even though the progress seems a bit stagnant at times. There are several intriguing movies based on these beloved attractions in the pipeline. For instance, Margot Robbie’s production company is working on a film adaptation of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Space Mountain has also been in development limbo, passing through various screenwriting teams. Not to mention, we keep hearing about the forthcoming Pirates of the Caribbean movie and the announced Jungle Cruise sequel, both eagerly awaited additions to Disney’s cinematic universe. However, it seems these projects are taking their sweet time moving forward on Dwayne Johnson’s production slate.
It remains unclear as to the release dates for these projects, but at least we can be certain that the Tower of Terror is still in development and has not been scrapped.
