The most compelling thriller TV characters are incredibly committed to their work, but their personal lives are usually a mess. This is certainly true of Dr. Kay Scarpetta, the lead character from Patricia Cornwell’s bestselling novels, who now stars in the Amazon Prime Video series Scarpetta. With the first season of eight intense episodes now finished, viewers are eager to find out if a second season is planned.
Season one centers on Kay (Nicole Kidman), a seasoned chief medical examiner in Virginia. She’s navigating a difficult marriage and a strained relationship with her sister, Dorothy (Jamie Lee Curtis), all while facing a new challenge: a serial killer connected to a case she solved years ago in 1998. Throughout the eight episodes, Kay confronts personal trauma, mounting terror, and family drama, all expertly woven together. With 29 Kay Scarpetta novels already written by Patricia Cornwell – and more on the way – viewers can expect plenty of gripping stories to come.
‘Scarpetta’ Season 2 Is Confirmed by Amazon Prime Video

Prime Video
In September 2024, Deadline announced that Amazon Prime Video had ordered two full seasons of Scarpetta. This was great news for fans and everyone making the show! It meant viewers could enjoy the first eight episodes knowing there would be more, and the creators could plan a long-term story instead of worrying about whether the season would be the end of the series.
While we don’t have a specific release date yet, production on the second season reportedly started in March 2026, according to The Los Angeles Times. This suggests we won’t have to wait much longer to see Kay, Dorothy, and the rest of the cast return.
What Cast Members Are Starring in ‘Scarpetta’ Season 2?
In September 2024, Deadline announced that Prime Video had ordered two seasons of Scarpetta, and revealed five actors who would be series regulars: Jake Cannavale, Bobby Cannavale, Rosy McEwen, Simon Baker, and Ariana DeBose. It’s likely these actors, along with Jamie Lee Curtis and Nicole Kidman, will return for Season 2. We might also see Hunter Parrish as a younger version of Simon Baker’s character, Benton Wesley, and Amanda Righetti as a younger Dorothy. The show’s cast is excellent, so it’s great news that they’re all expected to reprise their roles.
Maya McEwen delivers a compelling and emotional performance as Kay, a young woman who is driven, self-reliant, and intelligent. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she described Kay as feeling overwhelmed and hinted at exploring even more depth to the character in the upcoming second season. McEwen explained:
I hoped to see her character have a bigger emotional payoff during the show, and she gets a little of that. But going into the next season, I plan to give her a chance to unwind and experience some peace.
Honestly, watching Kay, it’s just impossible to picture her ever truly getting a break. Whether it’s dealing with her demanding job or the constant family drama, she’s always on edge – and that’s true whether we’re looking at her past or present. I’m starting to wonder if we’ll ever see her relax, maybe not even until Season 10 of Scarpetta?
What Could ‘Scarpetta’ Season 2 Be About?

Amazon Prime Video
Adapting popular books for television is always a challenge, but the first season of Scarpetta did a good job of capturing the spirit of the novels. Season 2, according to The Los Angeles Times, will cover the fourth and fifth books in Patricia Cornwell’s series: Cruel and Unusual (1993) and The Body Farm (1994). The fourth book centers around a disturbing case: a boy is murdered in a way that seems to mirror the crimes of executed serial killer Ronnie Waddell. The fifth book focuses on a similar murder investigated by the FBI, but with a killer they can’t identify. These two storylines could easily connect, and combining them would be a logical move for the show’s writers.
What sets this show apart is that each season adapts material from multiple books. Jamie Lee Curtis explained to Entertainment Weekly that the creators are weaving together the storylines of two books, essentially combining them episode by episode and linking the mysteries from both.
As a huge fan of the Scarpetta series, I’m really excited about how they’re planning things going forward. It sounds like each season, they’ll be releasing two books simultaneously. Patricia Cornwell is still writing the main Scarpetta novels, but alongside those, they’re creating complementary crime stories. They’ve actually planned these pairings out carefully – think of it like pairing wine with food! Each pair of books will explore a similar overarching story, but from different time periods, which I think is a really clever way to expand the universe and keep things interesting.
Instead of following the Scarpetta novels in order, the TV series takes a more interesting approach. According to Entertainment Weekly, Season 1 draws from both Autopsy (the 25th book, published in 2021) and Postmortem, the very first Scarpetta novel, which came out in 1990.

The first season of Scarpetta ended with Kay and her family facing a lot of hardship. Things are really falling apart for them, and viewers are left with several unanswered questions. Will Kay and Benton be able to repair their relationship, or is their divorce inevitable? How will Lucy cope with everything? And what new case will Kay investigate next?
It’s reassuring to know that Patricia Cornwell, the author of the Scarpetta novels, is pleased with the TV adaptation – something that doesn’t always happen with book-to-screen projects. In an interview with PEOPLE, she described the show as “unbelievable” and “beyond my wildest dreams.” While the character Kay will continue to face challenges, we hope she experiences some happiness in Season 2 of Scarpetta.
