A sixth Scary Movie is planned, and it will poke fun at the current trend of unnecessary movie sequels. The original Scary Movie debuted in 2000 when spoof films were becoming popular, and it surprisingly found success despite many similar movies failing. It initially parodied Scream and other horror films, with the Wayans brothers leading the creative process. Keenan Ivory Wayans directed the first two installments, then David Zucker, known for The Naked Gun, took the helm for the next two. The most recent Scary Movie came out in 2013 and was directed by Malcolm D. Lee, who also directed The Best Man.
The next Scream movie, officially announced as Scream 6, playfully mocks a common Hollywood practice with its title. A recent casting call revealed the movie will be filmed in November 2025 and is being stylized as Scary MoVIe. The joke refers to the overuse of Roman numerals—like ‘VI’ for 6—in movie titles, a trend that feels unoriginal at this point.
Scary Movie 6 Slamming Movie Trends From the Start

The new title for Scary Movie 6, now simply Scary MoVIe, suggests a bold and unconventional approach from the beginning. This echoes a similar, but unsuccessful, tactic used by the Fox Marvel film The Fanta4tic Four, where the number “4” didn’t make sense when spoken. The title Se7en likely inspired this, though Se7en was a much better film and at least included the number within a pronounceable word.
Some movie titles have been intentionally unusual. For example, the horror film The Witch was branded as The VVitch to reflect its 17th-century setting, inspired by an old pamphlet director Robert Eggers discovered. Others, like the sci-fi movie eXistenZ, simply aimed for a unique look. Director Darren Aronofsky also used a symbol for his early film, π (Pi).
The title is just the beginning! Scary Movie 6 will once again parody popular horror films, this time focusing on more recent and well-received titles. Marlan Wayans recently told ComicBook that the movie will poke fun at films like I Know What You Did Last Summer, the latest Scream installments, Longlegs, Get Out, Nope, and even Sinners, which is expected to be a top horror film of 2025.
The Scary Movie series has had its ups and downs, but people always appreciate a good laugh, and the Wayans brothers often deliver that in these films. Since horror movies are becoming increasingly popular and respected, now could be a great time for some well-made spoofs. If Scary Movie 6 can recapture the humor and spirit of the original films, it could be a really enjoyable experience for fans of comedy horror.
