The season 3 finale of School Spirits dramatically changed the show’s direction, launching the characters into a new phase with the revelation of a dark secret. Throughout the season, viewers watched Maddie Nears (Peyton List) readjust to life at Split River High, now fully back in control of her body.
The first two seasons of the Paramount+ series revolved around Maddie’s death and subsequent disappearance, caused by Janet Hamilton (Jess Gabor) who had taken over her body. However, the latest season showed Maddie regaining control. Unfortunately, this led to Simon Elroy (Kristian Ventura) becoming strangely connected to the spirit world after Maddie was fully restored.
This season of School Spirits delved deeper into the mysteries of the spirit world as Simon learned more about it, and Maddie adjusted to being alive again. Their efforts to bring Simon back faced surprising challenges. With plenty of twists and turns, season 3 explored the idea of crossing over to the other side, revealing new layers to the story and expanding on what that means.
Throughout the series School Spirits, ghosts have sometimes moved on to another realm, but this season brought that possibility closer to home for the main characters. As Wally Clark (Milo Manheim) neared the point of finally crossing over in the last episode, the season finale left viewers with a lot of unanswered questions.
Season 3 of School Spirits revealed more about the villain, Alfred Van Heidt (played by Michael Adamthwaite), and his disruptive actions. The finale clarified his mysterious background, providing answers that viewers had been waiting for. This development strongly suggests the need for a fourth season to continue the story.
School Spirits’ Finale Finally Explores The Ley Lines
In the final episode of School Spirits season 3, Maddie spends most of her time investigating the ley lines – a strange, newly discovered forest with powerful and unusual effects. These ley lines seem to be crucial to understanding what happens after death, and Maddie uncovers some important clues about them during her exploration.
Okay, so the movie introduces this fascinating idea that staring at your reflection in these special lines of energy – ley lines – can send you back to a cherished memory. At first, it’s beautiful, really touching. But quickly, I realized it’s not all sunshine and roses. The film explores how, while revisiting the past can be comforting, spirits can actually get stuck in these memories, trapped forever. It’s a clever concept, and while the scenes within the ley lines are visually stunning and emotionally resonant, the movie leaves you with a lot of unanswered questions and a slightly unsettling feeling. It’s not a fully explained phenomenon, and honestly, that ambiguity is part of what stuck with me after the credits rolled.
The ley lines gave Maddie and the others valuable clues, but they’re just the beginning of a much bigger mystery. Now that the spirits have access to a wider range of locations, there’s a whole new area to investigate if the show gets renewed. The executive producers of School Spirits have hinted at some exciting possibilities for the future.
Simon’s Return To The Real World Resolves A Major Story

Maddie and the team from School Spirits are still trying to figure out the meaning of the ley lines, but they also needed to solve another big puzzle in the show. After spending the whole season as a spirit with no answers, Simon finally returned to the living world in the season 3 finale of School Spirits.
The final episode shows things are very serious when Wally, Maddie, and other ghosts team up to rescue Simon from the spirit world. Simon even forgets who he is, making the situation especially hopeless. However, thanks to their strong connection, Maddie manages to bring him back to his body.
After Simon and Maddie escape back to the real world, it’s uncertain if Simon has fully returned to life, or if he’ll be pulled back to the spirit world. Luckily, during a confusing encounter with Alfred controlling Dr. Hunter-Price, Simon manages to return to the living, bringing his months-long journey in the spirit world to an end.
Maddie & Wally’s Romance Provided A Cathartic Reunion
The connection between Maddie and Wally has become a highlight of School Spirits, starting back in season one. Though their relationship wasn’t originally planned as a romance, the growing attraction between them throughout season three has made fans even more invested in seeing them together.
During the season finale, Wally almost fully crossed over, becoming stuck in a pleasant memory within the ley lines. Luckily, Maddie managed to bring him back. This led to a powerful moment: they finally touched after a season of being apart, and shared a deeply emotional kiss that showed how strong their feelings are for each other.
Okay, so Maddie’s back from the dead, which is… complicated, because Wally’s already halfway to the afterlife himself. It creates some real tension! But honestly, the spark between actors Peyton List and Kristian Manheim is amazing. Seriously, their chemistry is so good that the show would be making a huge mistake if it ever tried to keep these two apart again. I’m really rooting for them!
Van Heidt’s Power Moves Give Maddie A Major Challenge Ahead
The third season of School Spirits ended by finally addressing a major mystery: the apparent death of Van Heidt. But as is typical for Split River, nothing is ever simple. Throughout the season, Alfred had been controlling Dr. Hunter-Price (played by Jennifer Tilly), but that changed in the finale.
The final episodes of School Spirits season 3 took a surprising turn. Although it initially seemed like Van Heidt would be removed from the group after a confrontation with Maddie and Simon, things changed quickly. As Simon and Maddie returned to their normal lives, the way each mystery was solved felt unsettling and strange.
The latest episode revealed that removing Van Heidt from Hunter-Price’s body has caused even bigger problems. Now that Alfred has taken over Maddie’s mother, Sandra Nears (played by Maria Dizzia), the fourth season of School Spirits will have a completely different and more difficult challenge to overcome.
