The 1990s produced some incredible sci-fi movies, including huge hits like Jurassic Park, Total Recall, and Independence Day. One film from that era initially received negative attention, but has since become a beloved cult favorite. Fans only have a little over a week left to watch it on streaming before it’s removed.
Netflix has a great selection of sci-fi films, including titles like The Martian and Jurassic Park, but some content is leaving soon. On October 31st, the cult classic Starship Troopers from 1997 will no longer be available, so you only have a few days left to watch it. The film takes place in the future when Earth is at war with giant, dangerous bugs called the Arachnids. A group of soldiers is sent to their home planets to fight back and save humanity.
Starship Troopers Is One of the Most Misunderstood Movies of All Time
When Starship Troopers came out in 1997, it wasn’t well-received. Many critics mistakenly thought it promoted fascism, when it was actually intended as a sharp satire and criticism of fascist ideologies and excessive military power. Some reviewers, like those at The Washington Post, were unsure if director Paul Verhoeven was mocking or admiring Nazi Germany. Others, such as The Los Angeles Times, believed the film simply repeated the pro-fascist ideas found in Robert A. Heinlein’s original 1959 novel.
Since it came out, Starship Troopers has gained a strong following and is now a beloved cult classic. While it’s an action-packed movie about fighting bugs – with a 72% score from critics and 70% audience approval on Rotten Tomatoes – it’s also seen as a clever critique of militaristic societies. It combines intense, realistic action with ideas that still make you think.
While it wasn’t a hit right away, Starship Troopers became the foundation for a long-running military science fiction series. This includes four sequels: the live-action films Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation (2004) and Starship Troopers 3: Marauder (2008), plus the animated movies Starship Troopers: Invasion (2012) and Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars (2017). There was also an animated TV series in 1999.
Where to Stream Starship Troopers After It Leaves Netflix
Currently, Starship Troopers isn’t available on any major streaming services. We should know more next month when streaming services release their November 2025 schedules, as it might become available then. If not, fans can still rent or buy the movie digitally through services like Fandango at Home, Google Play Movies, and Prime Video, or purchase a physical copy.
If you enjoyed Starship Troopers and want to continue the story before it’s removed from Netflix, finding the sequels can be tricky. While the two live-action sequels are streaming on The Roku Channel, the animated ones are only available to rent or buy digitally.
