There’s a lot of discussion about reboots and sequels, but most of them actually do well. This one is a good example of that.
The follow-up to Scott Derrickson‘s popular 2021 movie came out in theaters on October 17th and was well-received by both audiences and critics. The original cast reprised their roles, even bringing back a character who died in the first film. After the sequel’s success, Derrickson shared what it would take for him to make Black Phone 3.
With the popular horror movie now available digitally, the director discussed the possibility of a sequel. While Black Phone 2 provides a definite conclusion for the characters Finn, Gwen, and The Grabber, Derrickson stated, “A continuation is definitely possible, but it’s not necessary.”
The director of the film emphasized that any sequel to Black Phone—a potential Black Phone 3—would require a compelling story to justify its existence. He explained, “There needs to be a good reason to continue the series.” He also shared his fondness for film franchises, noting he’s a fan of long-running series like Halloween and Elm Street, and enjoys revisiting familiar characters and villains.
I’m really looking for films that are bold, original, and unexpected,” the filmmaker said. “I believe audiences connected with this movie because it offered something truly different.
He also talked about the criticism surrounding it, saying that he understood why some people didn’t like how different it was from the original film. He acknowledged that viewers might have preferred something more similar to the first one, but explained that wasn’t his goal.
Director Derrickson explained that a third Black Phone movie would need a significant change in direction to feel worthwhile. He doesn’t see a reason to make another one unless it offers something new and unexpected.
The Black Phone Franchise Has Been a Commercial Success
The Black Phone first premiered at Fantastic Fest in 2021, but wasn’t released in U.S. theaters until June 24, 2022, after a few delays. Despite the delays, the film was a hit, earning $161.4 million globally on an $18 million budget, according to The Numbers. Critics and audiences alike enjoyed it, giving it an 81% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating and an even higher 88% audience score.
Fortunately, Black Phone 2 is performing well. Although its critic and audience scores are a bit lower than the first film, it still boasts a respectable 72% Fresh rating from critics and an 83% audience score. The movie has also earned $123.6 million globally on a $30 million production budget.
Black Phone 2 is available to purchase on rent on all digital platforms.
