After the BBC announced on Monday, March 30th, that Scott Mills was leaving due to concerns about his behavior, the radio presenter has now issued a statement.
This follows confirmation from the Metropolitan Police that Mills was questioned in 2018 about serious sexual offense allegations involving a boy under 16. These allegations concerned incidents reportedly happening between 1997 and 2000. The police started investigating in 2016, but closed the case in 2019 because they couldn’t find enough evidence.
Following the news that my contract with the BBC has ended, there’s been a lot of speculation. I can confirm that a statement recently released by the Metropolitan Police concerns me.
In 2016, someone accused me of a past sexual offense. The police investigated, and I fully cooperated with them in 2018. They sent their findings to prosecutors, who decided there wasn’t enough evidence to file charges.
Look, this whole situation stems from something that allegedly happened almost three decades ago, and the police wrapped up their investigation seven years ago. Honestly, I just don’t think there’s anything more to be gained by discussing it publicly, and I’m hoping everyone – both the public and the media – can respect that. I’ve said what I need to say, and I’d really like to move on.
I’m deeply grateful for the support and kindness I’ve received, especially from my former coworkers and all of my wonderful listeners, whom I miss very much.

Earlier this week, the Metropolitan Police issued a statement regarding an investigation that began in December 2016. The investigation started after receiving a referral from another police force and concerns allegations of serious sexual offenses against a teenager, reportedly occurring between 1997 and 2000.
Police questioned a man in his 40s under caution in July 2018 as part of their investigation.
Investigators sent a complete collection of evidence to prosecutors, but they decided there wasn’t enough proof to file charges. Based on this advice, the investigation ended in May 2019.
The BBC revealed on Wednesday, April 1st, that they were aware of a police investigation dating back to 2017. However, they stated they took quick action after receiving new details recently, and ended the individual’s contract on March 27th.

The BBC said Scott Mills had a successful and lengthy career with the organization, and that many people were shocked and surprised to hear the news this week.
We’ve seen a lot of discussion in the news and online since Monday, and we want to explain why we can’t share every detail. We need to respect the privacy of everyone involved, which limits what we can say publicly.
We recently received new information about Scott and spoke with him directly. Following this, the BBC took swift action, consistent with our principles, and ended his contracts on March 27th.
The BBC is dedicated to making substantial improvements to its workplace culture, how things are done, and its overall standards. After a thorough, independent review last year, we established clear expectations for how everyone connected with the BBC should behave, and we made it clear that there would be consequences for not meeting those expectations.
As a longtime fan of the BBC, I was concerned to learn they were informed back in 2017 about a police investigation. It’s now come to light that investigation was closed in 2019 without anyone being arrested or charged. The BBC is currently looking into exactly what they knew at the time, which I think is the right thing to do.
