Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen were a hugely successful pair on the basketball court, leading the Chicago Bulls to six championships in the 1990s. However, recent revelations have shown their relationship off the court wasn’t as close as many thought, with Pippen stating they were “never great friends.” He recently discussed this further, and also explained where he and Jordan stand now after disagreements surrounding the documentary series *The Last Dance*.
Many people may not realize that Scottie Pippen first said he wasn’t bothered by the ESPN documentary series about Michael Jordan, especially since Jordan’s company had a say in how it was made. But in his 2021 book, *Unguarded*, Pippen strongly criticized Jordan and changed his tune. More recently, he offered a more measured perspective on both Jordan and their coach, Phil Jackson, in an interview with Marca about basketball.
We never really had a strong personal connection, but when we were on the court together, we clicked. That’s just how things are in this industry. It’s the same with Phil Jackson – we’re not close friends now. That’s life, and people and relationships evolve over time.
Scottie Pippen had previously claimed Michael Jordan manipulated the documentary to focus more on himself than the team. He later went further, calling Jordan a poor player and suggesting he’d negatively influenced the game. These comments drew widespread criticism, with Charles Barkley accusing Pippen of trying to boost book sales through controversy. Even before his passing, Jerry West voiced his disagreement and bewilderment regarding Pippen’s statements.

Even though Scottie Pippen sometimes criticized Michael Jordan, he also frequently spoke highly of him. For example, in 2022, when asked if he’d play with Jordan again, Pippen immediately said he would, and that he’d only play with Jordan. More recently, in early 2024, Pippen acknowledged Jordan’s five NBA MVP awards, noting that their team’s success led to those accolades, but also stating that Jordan was the “greatest player” ever.
Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen are still reportedly not on good terms, judging by Pippen’s recent statements. Many people, however, are hoping they can resolve their differences and become friends again. Former teammate Craig Hodges believes they should be mature enough to move past their issues, while another Bulls player, Dennis Rodman, also expressed hope for a reconciliation.
It’s becoming less likely that Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan will repair their relationship. However, recent events suggest a reconciliation isn’t impossible. Still, it appears these two basketball legends – both ranked among the 75 greatest players ever – will likely remain distant from each other.
If you want to watch Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen dominate as the Chicago Bulls, be sure to check out the documentary *The Last Dance*. You’ll need a Netflix subscription to stream it.
