The next installment in the Scream series, Scream 7, is set to release and could be a turning point for the franchise. There’s been a significant change behind the scenes, as the team responsible for the successful 2022 and 2023 Scream films has left. This happened after star Melissa Barrera was let go due to her personal beliefs, and her co-star Jenna Ortega also decided not to return. Now, longtime Scream writer Kevin Williamson is taking on the role of director. The film will feature the return of beloved characters like Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), as well as classic Ghostface villains Stu Macher (Matthew Lillard) and Roman Bridger (Scott Foley).
The reappearance of killers thought to be gone for good in Scream has sparked a lot of debate about what Scream 7 will be like. Some fans theorized the new movie would have a complex, self-aware layer, potentially allowing actors like Matthew Lillard and Skeet Ulrich to play versions of themselves within the Stab movies shown inside the Scream universe. However, writer Kevin Williamson now suggests Scream 7 will move away from the core elements that have defined the franchise.
Don’t Expect Scream 7 To Be Meta

While discussing Scream 7 with Empire magazine, Kevin Williamson hinted that the new movie won’t focus on the same kind of self-aware, satirical storytelling found in previous installments. He suggested the filmmakers are intentionally moving away from that approach.
The film isn’t trying to be self-aware or make a larger point about the genre, explained Williamson. Instead, it focuses on continuing the story of Sidney Prescott, now centering on her daughter and the importance of family.
In Scream 7, Sidney Prescott is now a mother to a teenage daughter named Tatum (Isabel May). When a new Ghostface killer appears in the peaceful town where Sidney has settled down, her worst fears come true as Tatum becomes the latest target. Sidney is forced to confront her traumatic past and do everything she can to protect her family and stop the violence.
Considering the plot summary and what Williamson has said, it appears Scream 7 will be a more traditional, character-driven slasher film. The focus seems to be on Sidney Prescott’s story and the lasting impact of her past trauma, which is likely appealing to both Williamson and Neve Campbell, who could bring a new level of depth to the role. This approach is becoming common in horror, as seen with Jamie Lee Curtis reprising her role as an older, deeply affected Laurie Strode in the 2018 Halloween reboot. Sidney Prescott is a major horror icon, alongside characters like Laurie Strode and Ellen Ripley, and Campbell deserves the opportunity to deliver a powerful and nuanced performance exploring her character’s legacy.
The self-aware style of the next Scream movie could be explored through the character of Sidney Prescott. The recent films have shown the “final girl,” Sam Carpenter, haunted by visions of her father, Billy Loomis. Sidney has a wealth of traumatic memories that could similarly appear as disturbing visions or dreams, impacting her everyday life and motherhood. This approach would allow the film to acknowledge its own history – perhaps with appearances by characters like Stu Macher – while still keeping the core story focused on compelling characters and dramatic events.
What’s particularly interesting is Williamson’s admission about the amount of blood in Scream 7. He explained they initially aimed for less gore, but realized it didn’t quite work. He decided they needed to add more blood, and Neve Campbell agreed with him.
