Scream & Urban Legend Stars To Unite In Gen X Slasher Parody

Skeet Ulrich and Alicia Witt are teaming up for a new horror-comedy film. Ulrich is famous for playing Billy Loomis, the Ghostface killer in the original Scream movies. Scream was a huge hit and helped launch a wave of self-aware slasher films in the late 90s, and Witt starred as the final girl, Natalie, in another popular one, Urban Legend (1998).

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Witt and Ulrich are the latest actors to join the cast of the upcoming horror-comedy The Big Kill. The film, produced by Live Nation Studios, is currently being directed by Todd Berger, who also wrote The Curse of Bridge Hollow.

This upcoming movie, written by Daniel Radosh of The Daily Show and featuring a soundtrack of 90s hits, is a comedic take on Gen X culture. It follows a group of friends at a remote cabin after a funeral who find themselves being targeted by a killer.

The movie’s title and story echo those of the 1983 film The Big Chill. That movie, directed by Lawrence Kasdan and featuring actors like Tom Berenger, Glenn Close, and Jeff Goldblum, followed a group of friends as they navigated complex relationships and dealt with grief after a funeral, all set to a soundtrack of popular songs from the 60s and 70s.

Similar to the film The Big Chill, the new movie boasts a large and talented cast. It includes Megan Suri, known from Never Have I Ever, Jolene from Star Trek: Enterprise, alongside Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite) and Pete Holmes (Crashing). Rounding out the ensemble are Natasha Leggero (Another Period) and comedians Trevor Wallace, Morgan Jay, and Steph Tolev.

Berger loved the original Scream and realized that characters in slasher films never seemed to get older, unlike him. That’s why he was thrilled to direct a horror comedy focusing on people his age – Gen Xers dealing with the realities of parenthood, mortgages, and the big questions in life.

MXN Entertainment’s Mason Novick is producing The Big Kill, with Ryan Kroft of Live Nation Studios serving as executive producer. Kroft believes the film’s blend of horror, comedy, and 90s music is a winning formula, and predicts The Big Kill will be a successful horror movie.

Novick emphasizes the need to balance humor and horror, explaining that they were lucky to find a cast including both established horror veterans and talented comedians.

Ulrich has frequently revisited the nostalgia of Generation X in his work. He’s appeared in the recent Scream sequels (2022 and Scream VI) and starred in the teen drama Riverdale, which also included Gen X stars like Luke Perry and Molly Ringwald.

Both Skeet Ulrich and Alicia Witt are well-known actors who have continued to work in the horror genre since their popular roles in the 1990s. Recently, Skeet Ulrich joined his Scream co-star Matthew Lillard in the new movie Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, and Alicia Witt starred in the 2024 horror film Longlegs.
