As a longtime fan, I was so excited to see Scrubs finally fix something that’s bothered me since season one! The show originally ended in 2008 after nine seasons, and they even tried a reboot with a new cast, but it just wasn’t the same. Now, Scrubs is back, and it’s amazing to see J.D., Turk, Elliot, and Carla all together again, navigating the completely different world of healthcare today.
Scrubs’ Opening X-Ray Is Finally Right in New Season
During a recent tour of the show’s set with Architectural Digest, Zach Braff revealed that the chest X-ray featured in the opening credits is now correctly oriented in the new episodes.
The very first scene of the TV show Scrubs features J.D. looking at a chest X-ray on a light box. Interestingly, the X-ray has been displayed backwards since the show’s beginning – it was a mistake that happened during filming! The show even acknowledges this error in season 5, when Elizabeth Banks’ character, Dr. Kim Briggs, flips the X-ray and jokes that it’s bothered her for years.
The show’s updated opening now features older J.D. using a tablet to view a chest X-ray, which correctly orients itself on the screen.
In a recent interview with Architectural Digest, Jason Braff shared that the show’s team debated keeping the X-ray as it appeared in the first season. Ultimately, they decided against it, and for a good reason, as Braff explained:
Originally, we explained the backwards X-ray by saying the characters were just interns and didn’t realize the mistake. But for the reboot, we decided to fix it. Since the doctors are now experienced and it’s a digital image, the X-ray should be correct.
Scrubs’ Revival Is Shooting for Incredible Medical Accuracy
Correcting the X-ray in the opening scene reflects the show’s commitment to medical accuracy. Creator Zach Braff points out that the original series was praised by the American Medical Association for its realistic portrayal of medical life – a distinction now held by the drama The Pitt.
The new Scrubs revival is striving for the same level of medical accuracy as the acclaimed episode The Pitt. To ensure everything feels realistic, the show has a team of medical professionals reviewing the set, props, and procedures. Zach Braff has said the team wants this part of the show to be absolutely flawless—so much so that they may have gone a little overboard in their pursuit of perfection.
Zach Braff Objected to the Scrubs Set Smelling Like a Hospital
I heard something really interesting from the production designer, Roger Fires, during the set tour. He’d actually found a spray that smelled like a hospital antiseptic – can you believe it? He wanted to use it on the Sacred Heart set to make everything feel super realistic. But apparently, Zach Braff shut that idea down, and honestly, I totally get it! Spending long days on set with that smell would be…intense.
Scrubs was always known for getting the medical details right, and the new season is continuing that tradition. The show’s use of a realistic chest X-ray is a good example of its commitment to authenticity, even while still being funny and lighthearted.
New episodes of Scrubs are on ABC Wednesdays at 8 PM, and you can also watch them on Disney+ anywhere in the world.
