Be warned, this article contains spoilers for Episode 3 of the Scrubs revival, “My Rom-Com.” The revival has brought back most of the original cast, but a few familiar faces are still missing. While we can look forward to seeing Janitor (Neil Flynn) and Jordan (Christa Miller) in future episodes, the passing of Sam Lloyd means Ted won’t be returning. The show has also acknowledged Dr. Kelso (Ken Jenkins) since its return. However, there’s one character who wasn’t a main part of the original series but fans have been hoping to see. The latest episode may have just hinted that this character will be making an appearance.
Elizabeth Banks was a popular recurring guest star on Scrubs, playing Dr. Kim Briggs in 16 episodes. Unlike many temporary characters, Banks’ character had a lasting connection to the show because Kim is the mother of JD (Zach Braff)’s son, Sam. Surprisingly, she hasn’t been seen in the recent revival of Scrubs, even though it would be natural for her to reappear. However, a subtle hint in Episode 3, “My Rom-Com,” suggests that Kim Briggs might be coming back soon.
The ‘Scrubs’ Revival Just Revisited Kim’s Last Known Place of Work

ABC
The storyline in “My Rom-Com” doesn’t directly involve Kim, but she does subtly appear in the episode. Elliot attempts to bring her patient’s ex-husband to Sacred Heart hoping he can persuade his ex-wife to seek treatment. However, the journey takes an unexpected turn when he accidentally ends up at the wrong hospital. The show doesn’t make a big deal out of this error, but it’s a meaningful detail: he arrives at St. Vincent’s, the hospital where Kim last worked during Season 8 of Scrubs.
It’s hard to say if Kim still works at St. Vincent’s Hospital, as the scene is very short and doctors often change jobs. She could easily be working somewhere else during the revival. But the show specifically choosing St. Vincent’s feels like a deliberate hint that Elizabeth Banks’ character from Scrubs might reappear. While it could just be a small reference for dedicated fans, St. Vincent’s isn’t widely known enough to be a common Easter egg, making a future appearance more likely.
It’s worth remembering that JD initially left Sacred Heart Hospital to work at St. Vincent’s in Season 8. However, that doesn’t seem to be true anymore, or at least, he didn’t stay there for long. Although he was meant to be the Residency Director at St. Vincent’s, JD mentions in the revival pilot that he’s never been a boss before. While there are positions higher than Residency Director, it’s misleading to say the role isn’t a leadership position. This change in the story could be explained later in the revival if St. Vincent’s plays a bigger part.
How Kim Can Factor Into the ‘Scrubs’ Revival
Given Sam’s connection to the show, it would make perfect sense for Kim to appear, even briefly, in the new season of Scrubs. Ideally, her appearance would tie into what’s currently happening in the story, and there’s a good opportunity to do that with JD and Elliot’s divorce. The show hasn’t revealed why they split up, but JD and Kim’s history could definitely be part of the reason. We know from the revival that JD and Elliot moved closer to Kim and Sam and eventually got married, and JD mentions wanting more than one child, which could mean Elliot is pregnant with their second child.
Throughout Season 8 of Scrubs, it becomes evident that Elliot is bothered by the continued closeness between JD and Kim. Although their relationship doesn’t seem romantic, they clearly share a strong bond as Sam’s parents. While Elliot’s jealousy is often played for laughs, it’s still noticeable. Had JD joined Kim at St. Vincent’s, their existing connection would have become even stronger. Even though Elliot had built a life with JD, perhaps those feelings of jealousy towards Kim never truly disappeared.
It’s not certain if Kim and JD ever reconciled. As far as we know, JD is still single after their divorce. However, this theory about Kim seems like a strong possibility for what caused their marriage to end. The show is currently keeping the truth hidden, but the return of St. Vincent’s feels like the beginning of clues that will eventually reveal the answer. While Kim could return to Scrubs in other ways, it’s hard to imagine any being as emotionally impactful.
