Good news for fans of the classic sitcom Scrubs: a tenth season is coming! The show, created by Bill Lawrence, originally aired from 2001 to 2009, spanning eight seasons. While a ninth season did exist, it wasn’t well-received, so many viewers see this new season as a fresh start or a continuation of the beloved original series.
The final episode of Scrubs season 8 beautifully wrapped up J.D.’s journey, but ABC decided to continue the show anyway. Season 9 introduced a new group of medical students, with only a few familiar faces from the original series. Unfortunately, this attempt to revive Scrubs failed completely, and plans for a tenth season were scrapped.
After almost twenty years, Bill Lawrence is reviving Scrubs with a tenth season! The original main cast will reprise their roles, giving fans a look at what their characters are up to in the 2020s. What makes this even better is that the ninth season will effectively be disregarded, allowing the new season to feel like a natural continuation of the show’s beloved earlier years.
Scrubs Season 9 Cast Members Aren’t Coming Back For Season 10
Dave Franco, who played Cole Aaronson on Scrubs during its ninth season, recently told ScreenRant that he won’t be appearing in the show’s upcoming revival. Because Franco was a key part of the often-criticized final season, it’s likely that none of the other new characters from that time will be back either.
Fans of Scrubs will be glad to hear this, and it’s not a criticism of Franco or any of the main actors from season nine – they all did great work. The problem wasn’t the acting; it was just that continuing Scrubs after such a strong final season wasn’t the right move. Franco seems to agree, saying he had a good time on the show but acknowledges that season nine isn’t very popular with viewers.
Scrubs Revival Only Works If It (Mostly) Ignores Season 9

One of the reasons Scrubs was so popular was its ability to blend genuine emotion with hilarious comedy. The show realistically portrayed the challenges faced by people working in medicine, particularly young doctors as they developed in their careers. This serious side was consistently balanced with over-the-top humor throughout all eight seasons, culminating in a satisfying conclusion where JD achieved his goal of becoming an attending physician.
Season 9 felt completely out of sync with the story fans had come to enjoy. Many of the original actors didn’t return, and the show drastically changed locations, moving from the well-known Sacred Heart Hospital to a medical school. It was a poorly received change that seemed motivated by profit rather than good storytelling.
Season 9 of Scrubs was a misstep, and the upcoming revival would be better off largely ignoring it. Bringing up anything from that season – except maybe as a joke about the show itself – would feel like an attempt to defend a storyline that didn’t quite work. Fans are excited for a Scrubs revival, but one that feels like a natural continuation of the original series finale. Ideally, that means moving forward without the characters introduced in season 9.
