Sean Bean’s This City Is Ours Becomes a Streaming Hit Ahead of Season 2

It’s been nearly a year since the first season of the popular British crime drama aired, and fans are eagerly awaiting news about the second season. The show continues to attract more viewers on streaming platforms, building even more anticipation.

According to FlixPatrol, the series This City Is Ours is now the second most popular show on AMC+ in the United States. It recently surpassed the highly-rated Dark Winds and is only behind another British crime drama in viewership. This success comes a year after the show first aired on BBC One in March 2025. The first season, which had eight episodes, concluded in May 2025, and a second season has already been confirmed.

This City Is Ours Has Critics and Viewers in Agreement

The first season of This City Is Ours was a hit with both critics and viewers, earning a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a remarkable 93% audience score. Star Bean, known from Game of Thrones and Snowpiercer, has received a lot of acclaim, as have the other actors in the series. Bean plays Ronnie Phelan, a crime boss who wants to leave the business, but finds himself caught in a power struggle with his second-in-command, Michael Kavanagh (played by James Nelson-Joyce from A Town Called Malice), and his son, Jamie (Jack McMullen, known from The First Team).

Bean explained that a gangster story without any violence wouldn’t be successful. He believes the show feels very realistic, which makes it even more impactful. He feels that portraying violence in a glamorous way isn’t as shocking, but he personally dislikes unnecessary or excessive violence, like large-scale fights or random gun violence.

Hannah Onslow, known for her role in The Doll Factory, plays Diana Williams, Michael’s girlfriend. The cast also features Darci Shaw (A Thousand Blows), Julie Graham (The Hardacres), Laura Aikman (Gavin & Stacey), Stephen Walters (Slow Horses), and Saoirse-Monica Jackson (Derry Girls). For Season 2, the BBC has added Shaun Evans (Until I Kill You) as ex-gangster Ozzie Thompson and Alvaro Morte (The Wheel of Time) as Felipe Guzman, a member of a Colombian cartel.

This City Is Ours Explores Organized Crime

When the show was first announced, creator Stephen Butchard expressed his enthusiasm for collaborating with Left Bank and the BBC Drama team. He described “This City Is Ours” as a story about love, greed, ambition, and the pursuit of power, set in a realistic and often hidden world.

Production for Season 2 of This City Is Ours began in October 2025. While a specific release date hasn’t been announced, the new season is anticipated to launch later in 2026.
