Sebastian Stan is hoping to reprise his role in a future Thunderbolts movie, and fans are eager to see the Winter Soldier and the New Avengers team up again in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Stan first joined the MCU in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger as Steve Rogers’ (Chris Evans) childhood friend, initially appearing as a member of the Howling Commandos. He later became the formidable Winter Soldier under HYDRA’s control, but has since broken free and evolved into a key superhero within the MCU.
Sebastian Stan said at Tokyo Comic-Con that working with his fellow cast members on the upcoming Thunderbolts movie was a blast. He specifically praised David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, and Florence Pugh, calling them funny and talented. He hopes fans enjoyed the film and will support a sequel. Despite a disappointing box office performance, the movie initially received a very positive reaction, and Stan’s enthusiasm for continuing the story will likely please many fans. The film is currently slated for release in 2025.
How Likely is a Thunderbolts* Sequel & Will Bucky Barnes Even Be Involved?

The movie Thunderbolts ended with Valentina de Fontaine publicly presenting the team as the new Avengers. This surprising reveal should be explored further in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While all the team members – including Winter Soldier, Yelena Belova, Red Guardian, Ghost, and US Agent – are confirmed to appear in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie, they likely won’t get much individual attention there. A sequel to Thunderbolts would be an ideal opportunity to delve deeper into their characters and team dynamics.
Despite a slow start at the box office following some recent Marvel disappointments, Thunderbolts is being praised as a step in the right direction for the studio. The film tackled serious issues like mental health and trauma, but also included humor, surprising plot twists, and a compelling villain with a meaningful story. This suggests a potential sequel could be more successful, potentially leading Marvel to greenlight it. However, with director Jake Schreier now committed to the upcoming X-Men reboot, a sequel to Thunderbolts would likely need a new director.
The upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars movies are likely to feature significant character deaths, and Bucky Barnes, a.k.a. the Winter Soldier, is a strong candidate. It would be disappointing to kill off Bucky just as he’s become a true hero, and fans are hoping he and a new team of Avengers—maybe including the Sentry—will appear in future Marvel movies. However, we’ll have to wait and see what happens.
