Disney+ offers a wide range of TV series, including both brand-new stories and content based on popular franchises. However, a recent six-episode spy thriller proved to be a letdown and has largely been overlooked by viewers. Disney is home to incredibly successful franchises like Star Wars, Alien, and Marvel—with Marvel being particularly valuable. Disney+ has allowed the Marvel universe to grow beyond the big screen and into connected TV shows.
Marvel shows on Disney+ got off to a great start with WandaVision in 2021, but the quality has been uneven since then. While some shows like Loki, Moon Knight, and Daredevil: Born Again have been hits, others like She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and Ironheart haven’t resonated as well. Despite these ups and downs, the shows have generally expanded the Marvel Cinematic Universe and connected to the films. However, the 2023 miniseries Secret Invasion didn’t quite live up to that standard.
With Secret Invasion, the Marvel Cinematic Universe began its Phase Five on Disney+ (following Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania in theaters). After the mixed reception to She-Hulk, expectations were high, but Secret Invasion ultimately fell short. Many MCU fans have essentially disregarded the show, leaving its place in the franchise’s history uncertain.
Secret Invasion Negatively Impacted The MCU
I was really excited for Secret Invasion – especially since it was based on a big comic event and brought back Nick Fury and Talos, who we first met in Captain Marvel. Kyle Bradstreet developed the series, and honestly, while I was glad to see those characters again, I think the show missed a chance to really explore what the Skrulls’ role is in the MCU. It felt like a bit of a letdown, even though it was only six episodes.
In Secret Invasion, Nick Fury and Talos joined forces when a rogue faction of Skrulls began a plan to conquer Earth. This group, led by Gravik, believed the only way to save their people was to secretly infiltrate and take control of the planet – something they’d been doing for years. The series revealed some surprising twists, exposing that several familiar faces in the Marvel Cinematic Universe were actually Skrulls in disguise.
Skrulls’ power to change their appearance let them secretly live among humans and interfere with important events, creating an intriguing mystery in the show. While Secret Invasion started with a lot of promise, thanks to the strong source material and its potential to significantly impact the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Disney unfortunately didn’t deliver a satisfying adaptation, making several odd choices along the way.
The first episode of Secret Invasion unexpectedly killed off a well-liked, non-superpowered character from the MCU, and this death didn’t really contribute to the plot. The show also significantly altered the storylines of established MCU characters, particularly Rhodey (Don Cheadle), creating plot holes and inconsistencies that contradict events from previous movies and diminish some of his key moments.
The plot and characters in Secret Invasion didn’t quite fit well within the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. Emilia Clarke’s character, G’iah, hasn’t appeared at all since the show ended. Because the series didn’t do a good job of adapting its source material – including the Skrulls, Nick Fury, and War Machine – many fans are choosing to ignore it. Marvel itself hasn’t acknowledged the show or its storyline yet.
Why Secret Invasion Should’ve Been An Avengers Movie
The announcement of a Secret Invasion adaptation generated a lot of buzz, largely because of the popular comic book series it’s based on. The Secret Invasion comic is a landmark event in Marvel history, famous for revealing that numerous superheroes had secretly been Skrulls in disguise, dramatically altering how fans viewed these characters.
The Secret Invasion storyline is ambitious, both in the comics and on TV, and had the potential to be a major, defining moment for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although a miniseries was a reasonable approach considering the scope of the story, it might have been more impactful as a full-fledged Avengers movie.
If Secret Invasion had been a movie instead of a series, it could have significantly impacted the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially by clearly establishing the Skrulls’ role alongside Earth’s heroes. This would have had a ripple effect throughout the Multiverse Saga, making future events like the arrival of Doctor Doom in Doomsday and the Secret Wars movie feel even more important.
Whether Secret Invasion will actually affect the larger story of the Multiverse Saga remains unclear. It’s uncertain if future Avengers films will change anything presented in the series, or simply overlook it. However, the show raised several questions and created plot holes that will likely need to be resolved eventually.
