Billy Zane looks like he’s about to make you an offer you can’t refuse.
As a lifestyle expert, I’m always fascinated by incredible transformations, and this one is truly remarkable! The actor playing Marlon Brando in the new film, *Waltzing with Brando*, bears an uncanny resemblance to the legend himself. He was tasked with embodying Brando during the early 70s, and honestly, he nailed it – even Brando’s own children were stunned by how much he looked and acted like their father!
Billy recounted on the September 17th episode of *Today* that when he showed Rebecca Brando some pictures, she playfully asked, “Is that you or Daddy?”
And the response was exactly what the 59-year-old was hoping for.
“I was like, ‘Well, I think we did it, right?’” he mused. “That’s the acid test, right there.”
The film tells the story of Marlon, a man with eleven children from three marriages, and his attempt to build an eco-friendly resort on his private island in Tahiti. Although he never completed the resort during his lifetime, director Billy points out that the concept was remarkably forward-thinking for its time.
Billy explained that the story highlights how the subject was likely a pioneer of the environmentalist movement, starting around 1969 or 1970-a time when environmentalism wasn’t yet a widespread concern.
Although the actor, known for his role in *Titanic*, was aware he looked similar to Marlon Brando, he credited the amazing work of the makeup and hair team with completing his transformation. However, portraying such an iconic figure like Brando presented its own challenges.
Billy described his process as surprisingly unconventional. He explained that actors often feel pressured to imitate Marlon Brando, almost as if paying homage to him.
The *Zoolander* actor was especially fascinated by Marlon Brando at that time, particularly when Brando was in Tahiti and seemed truly content.
Additionally, the film *Waltzing with Brando* is particularly meaningful for Billy Zane because his 14-year-old daughter, Ava Zane, appears in it. She plays the daughter of architect Bernard Judge, portrayed by Jon Heder. Billy and his partner, Candice Neil, are also parents to their younger daughter, Gia, who is 11.
Billy proudly announced on Instagram on August 16th that his daughter, Ava Zane, made her first appearance in a feature film, “Waltz with Brando,” playing Sabrina Judge. He also praised the actor, Heder Jon, who played her father, Architect Bernard Judge, describing him as ‘great’ and Ava’s character as ‘refreshingly sweet and wryly humorous’.

The British actor famously gained over 40 pounds twice for his roles. First, he did it for his performance as a con artist in the 2013 film *American Hustle*, earning an Oscar nomination. He then gained the same amount again to portray former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney in the 2018 movie *Vice*, which also garnered him an Oscar nomination.
Christian Bale famously transformed his body for roles, most notably losing 70 pounds to play the lean race car driver Ken Miles in his 2019 film, *Ford v Ferrari*. This wasn’t the first time he’d dramatically changed his weight for a movie; he also lost around 30 pounds while filming *The Fighter* in 2011.
For the 2020 film, makeup artist Matthew Mungle used a cast of Glenn Close’s head from the 2011 movie *Albert Nobbs* to create prosthetics – a new set of ears and a false nose – to transform her into her character, Mamaw Vance, a real-life Appalachian grandmother. Close received an Oscar nomination for her performance, as reported by *Variety*.
To play Donald Trump, the actor reunited with the hair and makeup team who previously turned him into Tommy Lee for the series *Pam & Tommy*. He also gained weight to more accurately portray Trump’s build.
Stan intentionally gained about 15 pounds by following his nutritionist’s advice: he ate a lot of instant ramen with soy sauce and drank soda, all to achieve a fuller face.
To portray the famous jazz singer in the 2021 movie, the actress lost nearly 40 pounds, a performance that earned her an Oscar nomination.
It might have seemed a little strange that he was reportedly eating just one almond a day, as his co-star Emily Blunt playfully pointed out. But the Irish actor was serious about accurately portraying the physical appearance of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the scientist behind the atomic bomb.
Cillian Murphy, who played Oppenheimer, described how important it was to capture the physicist’s unique appearance. He told *The New York Times* that he lost a significant amount of weight and worked closely with the costume department to achieve the right look, noting that Oppenheimer was very thin, almost gaunt, and had a habit of living on a diet of martinis and cigarettes.
The acclaimed actress won an Academy Award for Best Actress in 2004 for her compelling and unsettling performance as real-life serial killer Aileen Wuornos.
To portray the troubled Arthur Fleck, who later becomes Batman’s enemy, the actor lost 52 pounds. He received the Best Actor Oscar in 2020 for his compelling performance.
I was absolutely floored by the transformation of the Best Actress winner in that 2002 drama! It took a full three hours, and honestly, the makeup team used this massive prosthetic nose – it was incredible how completely they changed her appearance. I barely recognized her!
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve always been fascinated by actors who truly *become* their roles, and Tom Hanks is a master at it. For his incredibly moving performance as an attorney battling HIV and fighting for justice, he underwent a dramatic physical transformation – he lost 35 pounds and completely shaved his head. That dedication paid off, earning him the Best Actor Oscar in 1994! It wasn’t a one-time thing either; he’s known for going all-in, like when he lost a significant amount of weight and grew a beard for his Oscar-nominated role in *Cast Away*. It really shows a commitment to the craft, and it’s inspiring to see.
The actress famously gained weight for her role as Bridget Jones, but she didn’t need to change her body to play Judy Garland in the 2019 film *Judy*. She won her first Oscar for the performance, and the incredible transformation was all thanks to the work of the makeup and costume teams.
Renée had a strong connection with Jany Temime, the costume designer for the film, who also designed the costumes for the *Harry Potter* movies, Vulture reports. Temime said, “It felt like Renée truly became Judy while working on the film.”
Renée Zellweger explained that the costumes for the film were tailored to mimic Judy Garland’s specific posture. This meant the dresses wouldn’t fit Zellweger properly unless she held herself in the same way, and sometimes she couldn’t even zip them up.
Margot Robbie transformed herself for her role as Tonya Harding in the 2017 film about the figure skater’s infamous scandal. Unlike her glamorous character in *The Wolf of Wall Street*, Robbie used prosthetics, braces, and wigs to portray Harding and bring her story to the screen.
In 2014, Matthew McConaughey won the Best Actor Oscar for his dedicated performance as an electrician living with HIV/AIDS.
Heath Ledger won an Oscar in 2008, after his death, for his captivating and unsettling portrayal of The Joker in Christopher Nolan’s second Batman movie. His version of the famous villain was a significant departure from how other actors had played the role before.
Makeup artist John Caglione Jr. wondered to IGN what would happen if the character didn’t bother with his appearance. “If he slept in his makeup for a couple of weeks, or never changed his clothes…those little realistic details really brought him to life.”
He explained that when you picture clown makeup, it’s usually very precise and uses strong, defined lines. But this makeup was completely different – it was meant to be the opposite of that careful, detailed look.
The Academy Award-winning actress completely transformed her look to portray Brandon Teena, a real-life transgender man, in a 1999 film, and then again in Clint Eastwood’s 2004 Best Picture winner.
To transform into Winston Churchill for the role, the actor-nominated for Best Actor in 2018-spent over four hours each day having makeup applied and wore a special bodysuit similar to a Victorian corset.
I was absolutely floored by Natalie Portman’s dedication to her role in *Black Swan*. I remember reading that she lost around 20 pounds and pushed herself incredibly hard – some days she was training for up to 16 hours! – to convincingly portray a ballerina struggling with mental illness. It’s no surprise she won Best Actress at the Oscars; the commitment was just astounding.
Jared Leto, known for his transformative roles, won the Best Supporting Actor award in 2014 after dedicating himself to portraying a transgender woman living with HIV. He lost 40 pounds for the role and fully embodied the character only while filming.
I’d transformed my body for roles before, but this was a completely different experience,” Jared Leto explained to TopMob News in 2013. “The part really required that level of dedication. It wasn’t just about the physical change; it was about how it impacted my movement, my voice, my entire being, and my emotions. It left me feeling incredibly vulnerable and insecure.”
The actress who won Best Actress physically transformed for her role in the 2015 film, gaining 15 pounds of muscle to play a mother escaping years of being held captive with her 5-year-old son, Jacob Tremblay. To fully understand her character’s experience, she also intentionally limited her social interactions and restricted her diet, even avoiding nutrients like Vitamin D.
Rooney Mara received a Best Actress nomination at the 2012 Oscars for her role in the thriller. She fully committed to the part of Lisbeth Salander, even going to the extreme of getting multiple piercings, bleaching her eyebrows, and cutting her hair.
