Derek Jeter had to take a rain check on this meeting.
The Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners had to delay their third playoff game on October 7th due to bad weather, pushing the start time back by over two hours. This meant a former baseball player, now working as an analyst for Fox Sports, had to temporarily pause his responsibilities as a father.
Derek announced on live television, after receiving a notification on his phone, that the event was delayed due to rain. He explained he was scheduled to attend a parent-teacher conference that he would now have to miss.
These comments were unusual for the former New York Yankees player, who generally keeps his personal life private. This includes time with his wife, Hannah Jeter, and their four children: Bella Raine, 8, Story Grey, 6, River Rose, 3, and Kaius Green, 2.
Though he has given occasional insight into how parenting has changed him.
Derek playfully told Francesca Amiker of TopMob News in September 2023 that some people might have seen him as emotionally reserved during his playing days. He clarified that wasn’t true – he just kept his feelings private. He added that having children has brought out a more tender side in him, and he’s thrilled about it.
Even though Derek and Hannah enjoy spending time with their children at home, they still prioritize having regular date nights.
Hannah told TopMob that they started a family immediately after getting married and continue to prioritize their relationship by taking trips and making time for each other. With a busy household full of kids and constant activity, things can be chaotic and stressful, so they appreciate the chance to reconnect with simple date nights.
And the kids are also learning to identify their personal passions.
Derek told *People* magazine in July that his 7- and 6-year-olds are naturally athletic, but don’t really enjoy playing organized sports. They’ve given swimming and tennis a try, but haven’t stuck with either.
The athlete, mentioning that Story also enjoys soccer, said that playing sports teaches valuable life lessons and hopes Story will give it a try.
As for his son, he’s working on his batting average.
Derek chuckled, describing how his son playfully swings whatever he’s holding, sometimes attempting to ‘hit’ people. “It’s a little chaotic,” he admitted, “but I try to keep things under control.”

Derek’s main advice is simple: keep having fun. He emphasized enjoying time with loved ones – family and friends – and finding joy in everything you do.
