Diane Keaton spent her final months out of the public eye.
Actress Shelley Duvall, known for her role in *Annie Hall*, passed away in California on October 11th, according to a family representative who spoke with *People* magazine. She was 79 years old.
Before her death, she had stayed out of the public eye for almost a year. Her last known outings were Christmas shopping the previous year and running errands in August 2024.
Keaton was instantly recognizable in her usual outfit: a bowl hat and glasses. She paired this with relaxed grey trousers, a black turtleneck, and a dark blazer for a simple, everyday style.
She appeared to be in good spirits, smiling and waving at onlookers while shopping in Los Angeles.
Seeing Diane Keaton out and about is uncommon, but she was recently spotted in Los Angeles. Before that, she attended the 2023 U.S. Open in New York City, where she enthusiastically cheered on Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka during the championship match.
Keaton, known for her role in *Summer Camp*, attended the event wearing a stylish outfit of white pants, a black-and-white striped top, a dark blazer, and a unique bowl hat. She watched alongside Ariana DeBose from a box seat while enjoying a drink.
And perhaps if there was one thing she was known for besides her acting, it was her sleek fashion.
In a 2021 interview with *Interview Magazine*, Keaton explained her fondness for incorporating black into her style. She believes a touch of black helps to define and draw the eye, saying it ‘sucks you in.’ As an example, she pointed to her current outfit: a black t-shirt paired with a black and white polka dot scarf. Keaton simply stated she loves black because it emphasizes and enhances, calling it ‘beautiful.’
At that point in her life, Diane Keaton wasn’t prioritizing fame or how she looked. She was much more interested in having new experiences. During an interview, when her friend Carol Kane asked her what was most important to her, Keaton replied that she treasured strong, long-lasting friendships like theirs.
She continued, saying she finds joy in simple things, like walking her dog and being outdoors. She especially loves exploring the natural beauty of California and Arizona, and feels incredibly grateful for the ability to see it all. It’s a truly amazing feeling for her.
Diane Keaton hadn’t retired from acting. When she passed away, she still had three films in development: *Artist in Residence* with Josh Hutcherson, *The Making Of* with Blake Lively, and *Constance*, which Mark Pellington was directing.
You know, looking back at that period in my life, I wasn’t all that concerned with how I looked or being the center of attention. I was much more interested in experiencing life and having adventures! It really hit home when my dear friend Carol Kane asked me what I cherished most. I immediately said it was a deep, lasting friendship – like the one we share, because I’ve truly relied on her for years.
She continued, sharing how much she loves walking her dog and being outdoors. She especially enjoys exploring California and taking drives to Arizona, but what she treasures most is simply being able to see the beauty around her – it feels like a miracle to her.
Despite her step back from the spotlight, Diane Keaton remained actively involved in filmmaking. When she passed away, she had three films nearing completion: *Artist in Residence* starring Josh Hutcherson, *The Making Of* with Blake Lively, and *Constance*, directed by Mark Pellington.
