Hilary Duff‘s music career is no longer so yesterday.
Hilary Duff, known for her role in Lizzie McGuire, released her first new song in over a decade, “Mature,” on November 6th. The song comes with a music video that signals a new, more mature phase in her career.
As a style and lifestyle expert, I’m loving the visuals in Hilary Duff’s latest project! The video, directed by Lauren Dunn, shows her getting absolutely glamorous – think a gorgeous gold mini dress, a fluffy fur coat, and the perfect lipstick application. She’s really creating a whole mood, even admiring some beautiful pink flowers while she gets ready. But the most striking part? She performs on stage, on this incredible circular daybed, and the audience is… just her! It’s such a cool, self-empowering concept and visually stunning.
In the chorus, Hilary sings about someone who reminds her of her younger self, saying, ‘She looks like she could be your daughter, like me before I gained some wisdom.’ She also recalls being pleased when someone complimented her maturity, saying, ‘I used to love when you’d say I was so mature for my age.’
These lyrics are just one example showing that Hilary Duff is becoming a more mature and insightful singer-songwriter. In the first verse, she details a very explicit situation involving her former partner and their current relationship.
The lyrics describe a sexual encounter on an old rug, with a suggestion that the woman is impressed by the speaker’s Basquiat painting. The lines also imply a disconnect between how she perceives him and his actual current state, hinting he’s not as profound as she believes.
Hilary, 38, explained the inspiration for her song “Mature.” She co-wrote it with her husband, Matthew Koma, and Madison Love, but clarified it isn’t about a past relationship.
She described her new song, ‘Mature,’ as a conversation between her current self and her younger self. It’s about looking back on the past with kindness and appreciation, offering support and recognizing how far she’s come. It’s a moment of gratitude and self-acceptance.
Hilary Duff said her decision to make music again, after a decade since her last album Breathe In. Breathe Out., was partly thanks to her husband, Matthew. He’s a successful producer who has worked with artists like Britney Spears, Zedd, Shania Twain, and OneRepublic.

The actress, known for Another Cinderella Story, shared on the November 5th episode of Jake Shane’s Therapuss podcast that after ten years away from music, being married, and reaching the age of 38, she finally feels like she understands herself and can complete her life’s story.

In January 2017, the couple publicly acknowledged their new relationship by appearing together on the red carpet at an Entertainment Weekly party before the SAG Awards, held at the Chateau Marmont.

Just after appearing together on the red carpet, TopMob News learned the couple had broken up in March 2017. A source said their demanding schedules led to the split.

By October 2017, Matt and his partner were dating again, confirmed when he attended her 30th birthday party. A source told TopMob News that their previous breakup was due to Matt’s tour schedule. With him back home, they easily resumed their relationship. She later shared on The Talk that this was actually their third attempt at dating, jokingly adding that “third time’s a charm!”

Hilary Duff and Matthew Koma announced they were expecting a baby girl in June 2018. Koma shared the exciting news on social media, writing, “We’re having a baby girl! She’s sure to be as beautiful and kind as her mother, @hilaryduff. A wonderful new journey begins.”

In October 2018, the couple welcomed their daughter, Banks Violet Bair, to the family. The actress announced the news online, saying that their “little bit” had completely captured their hearts and that Banks was born at home on a Thursday afternoon, describing her as “absolute magic.”

Almost two years after they first appeared together in public, Koma proposed to the actress.

Duff and Koma said “I do” in Dec. 2019, surrounded by their loved ones!

I was so touched by Matthew’s anniversary post to Hilary! They just celebrated a year of marriage, and he shared how much he appreciates her, especially everything she did for us all during the pandemic. He even called her a ‘badass,’ which I thought was a really sweet and genuine way to show his love and admiration. It was just a really heartwarming thing to see.

Hilary and Matthew went on to welcome daughter Mae James Bair in March 2021.
