SEGA Cancels Super Game Project and Moves Away from Live Service

SEGA has decided to stop development on its ‘Super Game’ live service project and will be focusing less on creating games designed to be continually updated and monetized over time.

Hidden within the company’s recent financial report, it was revealed that a five-year project has been cancelled before it could launch. The project, initially announced in May 2021, aimed to create innovative experiences for major games, moving beyond standard game design and utilizing Sega’s various technologies.

SEGA previously announced remakes of popular games like Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe, and Streets of Rage as part of its ‘Super Game’ plan. These projects are still in the works and could now potentially fall under the new ‘SEGA Universe’ initiative.

In a recent financial report, SEGA announced it was cancelling its Super Game project after re-evaluating its plans for live service games.

Because of this, SEGA has reduced its focus on free-to-play games. More than 100 employees previously working on these projects have been reassigned to teams developing SEGA’s core, established game franchises.

SEGA has often discussed significant investment in its Super Game project, envisioning it as a truly exceptional gaming experience. However, recent years have seen several of their live service games fail – some have been completely discontinued, while others have struggled to keep players engaged.

SEGA appears to be shifting its strategy, prioritizing revivals of its classic games – possibly with a greater emphasis on single-player experiences – and distancing itself from the recent Sonic Frontiers-style open-zone approach. While they’ve announced plans to bring back several older franchises, so far only ‘Shinobi: Art of Vengeance’ has been released.
