Next month, on April 16th, a game previously only available on Sega Genesis will be released on Nintendo Switch, PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. It’s an odd selection of platforms – including both current and last-generation Xbox consoles, but skipping those for Nintendo, and notably, no PlayStation consoles. This is surprising, as the game’s audience is probably largest on PC, followed by Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox. While a PlayStation release on PS4 or PS5 could happen later, there are currently no plans to bring the game to those consoles.
Okay, so this is totally weird, but there’s a new Sega Genesis game that wasn’t made in the ’90s! It actually came out in 2025. It’s called ZPF, and it’s a classic side-scrolling shooter. It was developed by ZPF Team and published by Mega Cat Studios – seriously, a brand new Genesis game in 2025!
A Retro-Inspired Horizontal Shooter
We haven’t been able to gauge how good the game is yet because it’s only been released for the Sega Genesis, meaning there aren’t any player reviews. It also doesn’t have enough reviews to get a Metacritic score, or even a single review from a professional critic. Hopefully, that will change now that it’s becoming available on more platforms.
The game is a fast-paced, side-scrolling shooter that takes inspiration from classic titles like Thunderforce, Elemental Master, and Lords of Thunder. Players will navigate vibrant, alien worlds, battle challenging bosses, strive for high scores, and discover hidden secrets.
We don’t yet know how much the game will cost on PC, Nintendo Switch, or Xbox consoles. However, since it’s a smaller game, most people expect it to be under $30. The $60 price tag for the Sega Genesis version is for a physical copy, which is more expensive to produce – particularly for that console. As of now, there are no plans to release a physical version on any other platform.
