A game originally released for the Sega Genesis in 1989 is surprisingly getting a sequel this year. The Genesis—also known as the Mega Drive in some regions—was Sega’s most popular console from the 80s through the early 2000s. It launched iconic franchises like Sonic the Hedgehog, Mortal Kombat, and Streets of Rage, which remain popular today. Now, a lesser-known Genesis title is making an unexpected return in 2026.
I was so excited to hear the news this week! Clear River Games announced they’re making a new Truxton game called Truxton Extreme! For those who don’t know, Truxton is a classic vertical-scrolling shooter that first hit arcades in Japan way back in 1988. It was ported to the Sega Genesis in 1989, and that was the only time it ever came to a home console. There was a sequel, Truxton 2, in arcades in 1992, but it never made it home. The series has been quiet ever since… until now! I can’t wait to play it!
What to Expect From This Long-Awaited Genesis Sequel
Truxton Extreme is a fast-paced shooting game designed for both experienced players and newcomers. It challenges players to defeat alien invaders using a variety of special weapons. While building on the classic gameplay of the original Truxton – released nearly 40 years ago – Truxton Extreme features a significant visual upgrade. The new game moves away from the original’s pixelated graphics and embraces a modern 3D art style.
Truxton Extreme will launch on July 30th this summer. It will be available on most modern gaming systems, including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. The standard digital version will cost $24.99, and a digital deluxe version will be priced at $29.99. Physical copies will also be offered for $39.99 or $49.99, with the price varying based on the platform.
