A reliable source familiar with Sega’s plans has hinted at what fans can anticipate in the next major Sonic the Hedgehog game. While Sega releases a Sonic game every year, full-fledged installments in the series aren’t as frequent. The last big 3D Sonic game was 2022’s Sonic Frontiers, which introduced open-world gameplay to the franchise’s signature speed. If you liked Frontiers, the next Sonic game appears to be heading in a similar direction.
During a social media exchange, someone directly asked gaming news source Nate the Hate to reveal details about the next 3D Sonic game. While he didn’t share specifics, Nate responded by asking if the user enjoyed Sonic Frontiers. This led many fans to believe the next game will likely be Sonic Frontiers 2, or at least share similar gameplay and features with the original Frontiers.
It’s not surprising to hear that Sega’s upcoming 3D Sonic game will play like Sonic Frontiers. Although opinions on Frontiers were divided, the game was a huge commercial success for Sega, selling almost five million copies worldwide since its release in 2022. This makes Frontiers one of the best-selling Sonic games of all time, surpassed only by the original Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
So, everyone’s talking about a possible Sonic Frontiers 2, and I’m already wondering when it’ll drop! Sega hasn’t officially said anything about a new Sonic game coming out in 2026, but honestly, they usually release something every year. Considering it’s Sonic’s 35th anniversary this year, I’m hoping we might see Sonic Frontiers 2 before 2026 is over. Fingers crossed!
