Sega’s Next Sonic the Hedgehog Game Will Rectify Big Nintendo Switch 2 Mistakes

At the unveiling of Nintendo Switch 2 last month, “Sonic x Shadow Generations” was among the initial games released on the platform. Despite some enhancements compared to its version from last year, the new release left many Sonic the Hedgehog enthusiasts disappointed. The most significant issue being that there was no option for existing owners to upgrade, and it was exclusively available as a contentious Game-Key Card edition. Consequently, I labelled it as the Nintendo Switch 2 launch game you’d be wise to avoid. Fortunately, Sega appears to be taking a different approach with “Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds”.

On a newly posted FAQ sheet, Sega has disclosed various details about the Nintendo adaptations of its forthcoming game. The launch date for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds on the Switch is set for September 25th, with most other versions following suit. A digital version tailored for the Nintendo Switch 2 is expected during the holiday season of 2025, while a physical version will be made available in early 2026. The physical release will come as a traditional cartridge (not a Game-Key Card), and those who purchase the Switch version can opt for an upgrade at a cost of $10, with their saved progress being carried over.

At launch, Sega was one of Nintendo Switch 2’s major backers, providing four titles on the first day: Sonic x Shadow Generations, an updated version of Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S, and a revamped version of Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut. Games previously available on Switch 1 did not provide any upgrade options, and all were digital releases. This announcement marks a significant change in Sega’s approach, as they are now offering new versions of their games at launch. Whether this trend will continue with future Sega games remains to be seen, but it’s certainly a positive development.

Fans who adore Nintendo’s Switch console have been growing increasingly annoyed by third-party developers not providing substantial updates for their Switch 2 releases. Recently, Square Enix announced that they will not offer an upgrade option for those who already own the original version of Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake on Switch 1, and there’s no possibility to transfer save data even if players decide to buy the Switch 2 version at full price. Adding to this disappointment is Square Enix’s decision to use a Game-Key Card for Switch 2, leading many gamers to question whether it’s worth purchasing the game on any Nintendo platform.

It’s still uncertain if this resistance will cause third-party publishers to change their strategies regarding the Nintendo Switch 2. However, it appears that some companies are seeing benefits from going above and beyond. For instance, Cyberpunk 2077 is doing quite well on the platform, making it one of the few third-party games to receive a true physical release for the Switch 2. It’s unclear if this had any impact on the game’s success, but it’s clear that such details are important to Nintendo fans.
