Sega recently announced it’s cancelling its Super Game project, which was first revealed in 2021. The company had described it as a combined effort focused on reaching online and international audiences.
In 2022, Shuji Utsumi, an executive vice president, shared some information about their Super Game project, mentioning that several games were in development. He also explained that this new game would be different from typical games, going beyond what players usually expect.
Utsumi explained that they’re working on several games under the ‘Super Game’ umbrella. These won’t be typical games, but immersive experiences that redefine how people interact with them. He noted that gaming has evolved – it’s no longer just about playing. Watching others play is now a significant part of the culture, and those viewers can also be considered gamers. Utsumi believes there’s huge potential in connecting players and viewers in new ways.
Since very little information about this unreleased game had been shared, its cancellation isn’t unexpected. The company is currently focusing on reviving its popular, older game franchises. Recently, Sega launched “Sega Universe” with the slogan “No old, stay gold.”
As a huge Sega fan, I’m so excited about the new Sega Universe! While we don’t know exactly what it all means yet beyond some cool merchandise, Sega has announced a fantastic list of games that will be included. We’re talking classics like Fantasy Zone, OutRun, Streets of Rage, and even some deeper cuts like Rent A Hero and Guardian Heroes. They’re pulling from all eras of Sega, from the old arcade days all the way up to the Dreamcast – it’s a really comprehensive collection!
The company also has several classic game series, and announced in 2023 that it was developing new installments of Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Shinobi, Streets of Rage, and Golden Axe. Recently, a new Shinobi game, called Shinobi: Art of Vengeance, was released – you can find our review for more information.
Sega hasn’t said much about its other projects, but they did confirm in December 2023 that the new Jet Set Radio game will feature an open world. There’s also been talk of a remake of the original Jet Set Radio. However, since the reboot was planned as part of Sega’s larger Super Game initiative, its future is currently uncertain.
A recruitment video from a few years back revealed that Sega’s new Crazy Taxi game will be a constantly evolving online experience with many players. The game world will be designed like a theme park – fun and lively, but still somewhat realistic. Players will still enjoy the classic Crazy Taxi action of quickly picking up and dropping off passengers, including dodging police and performing impressive stunts.
