Selena Gomez Confirms Taylor Swift’s Song “Dorothea” Is About Her

Selena Gomez, founder of Rare Beauty, recently shared that Taylor Swift’s song “Dorothea” was inspired by their friendship, five years after the release of Swift’s album Evermore.

She revealed on a recent episode of her husband, Benny Blanco’s, podcast, Friends Keep Secrets, that the song ‘Dorothea’ is based on her own life. She said many important experiences – from relationships and family to love and conflict – happened while she was 15 and the subject of the song was 18, and they were all learning and growing together.

She explained that they were confused about the situation. She added that their relationship hadn’t changed, and she was struck by how beautifully everything was expressed when she heard it.

After Taylor released her ninth album, many fans believed the eighth song was inspired by Selena, pointing to lyrics about dreams and beauty products as evidence. However, neither Taylor nor Selena ever confirmed these rumors.

Taylor sang, addressing Dorothea, “You’ll always know me, Dorothea. You’re like a queen, selling hopes and fantasies – makeup, magazines, anything at all. I’d buy anything from you. Hey Dorothea, do you ever think of me?”

When the “Enchanted” singer—whom Selena befriended in 2008 while Taylor was dating Joe Jonas and she was in a relationship with Nick Jonas—released the project, she shared insight into the song and its connection to her next track, “’tis the damn season.”

There’s this character, Dorothea, and I’m obsessed with her already. She’s this small-town girl who goes to Hollywood to become a star, and then the best part? She comes home for the holidays and runs into an old boyfriend! Seriously, the drama potential is HUGE.

It turns out Selena also inspired another song by Taylor, 36, which hadn’t been released.

Taylor Swift revealed she wrote a song called ‘Family’ about a past relationship. Speaking with Benny, Lil Dicky, and Kristin Batalucco, she explained the relationship ended over ten years ago. She described how the song’s lyrics, without directly quoting them, capture the feeling of having big dreams and wanting to be noticed – ‘You want to be in a movie, in every crowd I see you.’

She remembered him believing in her ambitious goals, like performing in huge stadiums. Now, listening to those early songs, both of those dreams had come true, which she found incredibly touching. She recalled how he’d simply said the songs were about their relationship, and that simple gesture meant the world to her.

Selena and Taylor have become even closer friends over the years. Taylor is currently engaged to Travis Kelce, who plays tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs.

It’s amazing to think back on our 17 years of friendship, all the ups and downs we’ve shared, and all the fun we’ve had together,” she said. “It was really special that we both got engaged around the same time.
