During a shared interview with Karol G on Complex, Selena Gomez found it challenging to recall Spanish phrases, momentarily slipping and using an inappropriate word.
In a recent Instagram post by an outlet on Wednesday, the actress, who is 32 and has undergone a striking transformation, can be seen conversing with the Colombian singer, aged 34. The actress appeared dramatically different in her latest appearance.
In the given passage, the duo was talking about a term often used to refer to the Greatest of All Time in Spanish slang, and Gomez suggested a word that prompted Karol G to swiftly correct the ex-Disney channel actor.
According to Selena, the only phrase I can recall uttering was “cucaracha.” This surprised Karol when she repeated it.
Afterward, she started to say, ‘I can’t figure out why I thought…,’ but Gomez quickly interrupted, ‘However, that’s actually a swear word!’
Karol G exclaimed, which left the actress questioning, “Is that like nonsense?” or “Is that equivalent to an expression of shock or surprise?

The QLONA artist consented and offered a fresh twist of phrase. “Let me express it differently, same sentiment, different language, perhaps ‘bro.’ Spending time with you is extremely bro-tastic.
Selena then repeated, ‘Chingon,’ and the songstress responded with, ‘Chingon! Ah you see.’
One wrote, “‘Selena doesn’t seem to understand what carnival is, oh my!'” and the other commented humorously, “That’s funny, it appears she hasn’t made an effort to learn better Spanish.” (Note: ‘carnaval’ in Portuguese translates as ‘carnival’ in English)
A fan commented, “Selena, keep it genuine,” as others cheered on the star and praised her collaboration with Karol G in their joint interview.
1 User posted, ‘I adore them as a pair!’, and another commented, ‘The way Sel says “cool” feels incredibly genuine’, accompanied by a laugh emoji.
In the past year, I found myself at the center of some criticism regarding my Spanish in the critically acclaimed and Oscar-nominated film, Emilia Perez – a musical crime drama. It was an enriching experience, albeit one that taught me the importance of authenticity and cultural sensitivity in storytelling.
Despite having spoken Spanish at home during her upbringing, the singer eventually found herself losing proficiency in the language following her relocation to Los Angeles for her career in show business.

In a widely shared video, Mexican actor Eugenio Derbez critically commented on the acting and accent of a fellow Spanish speaker in the film, describing the portrayal as ‘unjustifiable’.
She expressed that she gets your perspective…She regrets not being able to do more due to time constraints, but wants you to know that she invested a lot of effort and emotion into making the movie.
Near the end of last year, it was disclosed that Selena spent half a year learning Spanish in order to convincingly portray her character in the Netflix movie.
In an interview with NPR’s Fresh Air, Gomez shared that she started her first job at the age of seven, and majority of her subsequent jobs involved working in the English field.
1. “I seem to have misplaced my fluency in Spanish. It’s quite common, particularly among Mexican-American individuals.”
2. “My Spanish skills are nowhere to be found right now – it’s something many people experience, especially those of Mexican-American descent.”
3. “I can’t seem to find my Spanish language abilities at the moment; this is a situation that many people, particularly Mexican-Americans, often find themselves in.”
The star remarked, “If only I knew so much more than I currently do! Yet, it’s this very lack of knowledge that drives me to respect and uphold my culture to the best of my ability.
Selena shared that she has released an album in Spanish and is interested in this film, and she doesn’t believe this will be the only thing she does in Spanish.

A while back in April, Gomez, who is now betrothed to Benny Blanco, continued to advocate for her fluency in the Spanish language.
During an interview with Billboard, the actress from Only Murders In The Building shared thoughts about her experience on the show and dismissed any unfavorable opinions.
She shared that she deliberately stepped into challenging acting situations, which, although uncomfortable, turned out to be the most enriching for her. (She said this to the publication.)
Experiencing that period was truly enchanting, and collaborating with director Jacques Audiard is among the most rewarding projects I’ve had the pleasure to be part of.
Gomez added, “I’m being patient in searching for the perfect part and director for my next project. I want it to push me and surprise me.
In a latest Instagram selfie, Selena Gomez appears noticeably different, sporting a new fringe hairstyle, following reports of renewed tension between her and Hailey Bieber, as they recently stopped following each other on social platforms.
In a stylish setup, the founder of Rare Beauty looked toward the camera, her chestnut tresses arranged in soft curls that cascaded onto her brow, framing her face.
A rosy hue graced her cheekbones, giving off a lovely radiance, and she sported a lively orange shade on her lips.

She wrote in the caption: ‘I would, but I’d regret it, then get it redone so I simply wont #bangs.’
Gomez shared another photo, giving a peek at her expression, and mentioned the recent Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards of 2025, where her partner, Benny Blanco, was present.
In the caption below her second selfie, the actress wrote: ‘If only I could be there with all the kids @kidschoiceawards.’ or
The actress mentioned in her caption beneath the second selfie that she wished she could attend the Kids’ Choice Awards and hang out with all the children.
Later on, she explained through her Instagram stories that the hairstyle was actually a wig. She playfully referred to it as ‘wiggly wig.’
