Selena Gomez is killing ’em with kindness.
The singer of “Sunset Blvd” jokingly laughed when someone asked her how she shaved her mustache.
Selena explained in a video on her Instagram Story that the discoloration people noticed wasn’t makeup, but rather her melasma. She said, with a laugh, ‘I totally get why people thought that!’ She added that she manages the condition with skincare and treatment, but it’s still visible.
Melasma is a common skin problem that causes patches of darkened skin. This happens when the skin makes too much melanin, a pigment that gives skin its color. According to the Cleveland Clinic, sun exposure often triggers melasma, and that’s what happened to a 33-year-old woman who spoke about her experience.
In her video, she pointed out she had melasma and a pimple, highlighting that both were caused by sun exposure. She emphasized the importance of wearing sunscreen and being cautious about sun protection.
It took Selena a while to learn to not let skin issues bother her, but she’s finally reached that point. As she told Vogue in 2024, she’s grown a lot over the years and is now very comfortable with who she is.
She added, “Being true to myself means being unafraid of being me.”
That’s why she’s not afraid to go bare face these days.

She wrote in a 2020 CNN essay that she used to believe makeup was necessary to feel attractive, but now realizes true beauty comes from within. She now sees makeup as a fun addition, like an accessory, rather than a requirement.

That’s why I launched Rare Beauty back in 2019 – I wanted to shake things up and really change how we talk about beauty. My goal is to celebrate individuality and embrace what makes each of us wonderfully unique, rather than trying to fit into a single ‘norm’.
