Sense and Sensibility’s new adaptation adds The Sandman star alongside Daisy Edgar-Jones

In the upcoming adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, the role of Marianne Dashwood, previously brought to life by Kate Winslet in the 1995 film, will now be portrayed by Esmé Creed-Miles, who is best known for her work in Hanna and The Sandman.

In collaboration, she will jointly guide the upcoming adaptation with Daisy Edgar-Jones, who has just been cast as Elinor Dashwood, a role that was earlier portrayed by Emma Thompson.

In this new adaptation, it’s Georgia Oakley (known for “Little Bird”) who is taking charge as the director, while celebrated writer Diana Reid pens the screenplay.

In a post on Instagram, Creed-Miles expressed her gratitude by posting a picture of herself with the book, saying, “Beyond thankful.

A second picture showed her script alongside Edgar-Jones’s.

In the series adaptation, Creed-Miles gained recognition for portraying the lead character Hanna, and she has also made an appearance in Kristen Stewart’s debut film as a director titled “The Chronology of Water” on the big screen.

Austen’s novel “Sense and Sensibility” has had multiple movie adaptations through the years, each offering a unique interpretation of the story about the Dashwood sisters’ experiences with heartache, societal standing, and romantic blunders. Among these adaptations, Ang Lee’s 1995 film stands out as the most memorable, featuring Thompson and Winslet in lead roles. This film also boasted an impressive supporting cast that included Hugh Grant and Alan Rickman, and it won numerous awards.

Before Thompson’s Oscar-winning script, the BBC had been accustomed to adapting Austen’s works. As early as 1971, they produced a serial where Joanna David (mother of Downton Abbey’s Emilia Fox) portrayed Elinor, offering a more traditional perspective. In 2008, the BBC revisited the novel once again with a new three-part miniseries penned by Andrew Davies, who is known for his work on Pride and Prejudice.
