September 29 Will Be a Sad Day for Batman Fans

Batman fans aren’t happy about some upcoming news arriving on Monday, September 29th. While there’s a lot of exciting development happening with Matt Reeves’ *The Batman – Part 2* and James Gunn’s new Batman projects, changes to where Batman shows and movies are streamed could mean fewer options for fans to enjoy in the short term.

The TV show *Gotham* will no longer be available on HBO Max after Monday, September 29th. Originally airing on Fox from 2014 to 2019, *Gotham* ran for five seasons and 100 episodes, offering a fresh take on the Batman universe. Though Batman himself isn’t a major character, the show provides a detailed look at the city he protects.

The first season of *Gotham* begins with Detective James Gordon investigating the deaths of Bruce Wayne’s parents, all while a dangerous conflict brews between rival gangs led by the Maronis, Falones, and Mooneys. The series, starring Ben McKenzie, Donal Logue, Morena Baccarin, and David Mazouz, follows the evolution of the Gotham City Police Department and the rise of iconic Batman villains. All five seasons of *Gotham* will no longer be available on HBO Max after September 29th.

Batman Content Still Streaming on HBO Max

Batman: The Animated Series

Batman: The Animated Series is a groundbreaking DC show that introduced Batman to a new generation. It’s especially remembered for the incredible voice acting, featuring the late Kevin Conroy as Batman, Mark Hamill as the Joker, and the late Arleen Sorkin as Harley Quinn.

Over four seasons, this show explores Batman’s extensive past in Gotham City, introducing many of his most famous enemies. We also see the stories of dedicated Gotham Police Department officers like Renee Montoya, Jim Gordon, and Barbara Gordon. Though the show primarily centers on Batman, Gotham City itself plays a crucial role in the overall story.

Batwoman

In 2019, The CW launched a series focused on Batwoman, telling the story of Bruce Wayne’s cousin, Kate Kane, and later, Ryan Wilder, a former convict, both of whom become Batwoman. Ruby Rose initially played Kate Kane, but after some changes behind the scenes, Javicia Leslie took over the lead role as Ryan Wilder. The show also featured Meagan Tandy, Nicole Kang, Dougray Scott, and Robin Givens.

When Bruce Wayne disappears, Kate Kane first steps up to protect Gotham City, and then Ryan Wilder continues her work. The show draws heavily from Batman comic books, especially by featuring characters from the Gotham City Police Department, throughout its three seasons.

The Batman (TV Series)

The animated series *The Batman*, which aired from 2004 to 2008 on Kids WB, focused on the adventures of the Dark Knight and was aimed at younger audiences. Rino Romano voiced Batman, with Alastair Duncan as Alfred, Eve Sabara as Robin, and Danielle Judovits as Batgirl. The show had a total of 65 episodes.

The series begins with Batman establishing himself as a crime fighter in Gotham City, about three years into his career. Operating from the Batcave, he battles many of his most famous enemies. Although the Gotham City police don’t officially recognize him, the city’s rich history and background are central to the story, offering fans more to explore beyond Batman himself.

Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler

The series *Pennyworth* (later retitled *Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler*) focuses on the early life of Alfred Pennyworth, the iconic butler of Batman. The show explores Alfred’s past as a British soldier, long before he serves Bruce Wayne in Gotham City. Jack Bannon stars as the young Alfred, with Ben Aldridge playing Thomas Wayne, and features performances by Hainsley Lloyd Bennett, Ryan Fletcher, and Dorothy Atkinson.

Although connected to the world of *Gotham*, this show focuses much more on the early life of Alfred Pennyworth and takes place long before Batman appears, making it a different story than previous iterations.

The Penguin

Picking up after the events of the 2022 film *The Batman*, the 2024 series *The Penguin* focuses on the story of Colin Farrell’s character, Oz Cobblepot, and his ascent through Gotham’s criminal world. Many consider the show to be one of the best DC series ever created, and it stars Farrell alongside Cristin Miloti, Rhenzy Feliz, and Deirdre O’Connell.

This Emmy-winning show is set in Gotham City, but you won’t see Robert Pattinson’s Batman anywhere. Instead, it focuses on the rise of Oz and his involvement in the city’s criminal underworld as he gains power. Although another season isn’t confirmed, Gotham is expected to remain a central location if the story continues.
