Hollywood has been on a reboot kick, and horror is no exception. We’ve seen many classic horror franchises return to theaters as reboots or sequels, with varying degrees of success. It seems audiences can’t get enough! Recently, a sequel to a beloved horror film from the 1990s arrived on Netflix and quickly became a hit, making its way into the top 10 most-watched movies.
Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s new horror film, I Know What You Did Last Summer, a continuation of the 1997 movie, began streaming on Netflix on October 16th, shortly after a limited theatrical run. The film brings back original stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. and quickly became popular on the platform. Within a week, it landed in the top 10 most-watched movies in the U.S., alongside titles like Despicable Me 3, KPop Demon Hunters, and The Perfect Neighbor. As of today, it’s currently ranked at No. 4 on Netflix’s daily top 10 list in the U.S.
I Know What You Did Last Summer Is a Netflix Hit Despite Mixed Reviews

It’s no surprise that I Know What You Did Last Summer quickly became a top 10 hit. As a continuation of a popular ’90s slasher film and featuring well-known actors, it had a lot of hype going in. October is also prime time for horror movies, which has boosted streaming numbers for several scary films this month. However, viewers might find the new film isn’t quite what they expected.
While I Know What You Did Last Summer isn’t terrible, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. It delivers some tense moments as a slasher film, but it has flaws. Critics weren’t impressed, giving it a low 36% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and criticizing its plot, reliance on familiar tropes, and slow speed. In fact, Vulture‘s Bilge Ebiri called it “not scary, funny, or clever – just irritating.”
Audiences seem to be enjoying the movie more than critics, giving it a 68% approval rating. Many people appreciate its over-the-top style, the new actors, and how it doesn’t take itself too seriously – plus, there are plenty of exciting, violent scenes. It’s a fun but imperfect continuation of the original series, and a perfect choice for a spooky season movie night.
You can now watch both I Know What You Did Last Summer and I Still Know What You Did Last Summer on Netflix.
