Vin Diesel successfully relaunched his career by starring in moderately-priced movies that grew into major franchises. While films like Guardians of the Galaxy and The Fast and the Furious became huge global successes, and Riddick gained a dedicated following, his 2015 film The Last Witch Hunter didn’t fare as well. Despite a production and marketing budget exceeding $100 million, a release during the popular Halloween season, and Diesel’s peak popularity, the film only earned $146.9 million worldwide, making it a box office disappointment.
Despite a disappointing theatrical run that led Summit and Lionsgate to halt further films, Vin Diesel always believed The Last Witch Hunter could become a large franchise. While it was unclear if that would happen, Diesel is now confirming the story will continue in some form!
The Last Witch Hunter Sequel Gets Title & Release Date

The sequel to The Last Witch Hunter will be called The Lion’s Oath. Vin Diesel announced the movie is planned for release in 2026, which will also be the tenth anniversary of the original film. He expressed gratitude to fans for making the sequel possible.
We’re celebrating ten years since Kaulder first appeared! It all started this weekend a decade ago, and now, thanks to you, he’s back! Get ready for The Lion’s Oath in 2026!
In The Last Witch Hunter, Vin Diesel plays Kaulder, a knight from the Middle Ages who belonged to an order dedicated to hunting and killing witches. After a battle with the Witch Queen, Kaulder is cursed to live forever, preventing him from joining his deceased wife in the afterlife. Centuries later, living a solitary life in the present day, Kaulder discovers a plan to bring the Witch Queen back to life. He also finds that some members of his former order, the Axe and Cross, are now working against him, making him the last of the legendary witch hunters.
It’s interesting that recent franchises featuring immortal characters, like Keanu Reeves’ BRZRKR, are doing well in various forms of media, while The Last Witch Hunter didn’t quite succeed. The film actually gained some renewed attention when it was on Netflix earlier this year, so Vin Diesel and the team are likely hoping to capitalize on that momentum with a sequel. A big question now is whether the original cast members will be back for the next installment.
The Last Witch Hunter 2 Could Be A Team Film

At the conclusion of The Last Witch Hunter, the Witch Queen was defeated, and Kaulder teamed up with his new ally, Dolan 36th (Michael Caine), and a potential love interest, Chloe (Rose Leslie). Together, they planned to create a new group of witch hunters, independent of the established Axe and Cross organization. However, maintaining Kaulder’s immortality required him to keep the Witch Queen’s heart preserved in his vault.
Rose Leslie is still working in film and television, but Michael Caine has mostly retired. The character of Dolan was already replaced once in the first movie (with Elijah Wood playing a betrayer who helped the Witch Queen), so recasting the role shouldn’t be a problem. There are many exciting directions the story could take, including a prequel exploring Kaulder’s past, a direct sequel continuing the current storyline, a blend of both approaches, or even a time jump to ten years in the future, showing Kaulder living a new life – essentially a fresh start for the series.
