Serena Williams Addresses Rumor She’s Returning to Tennis

Serena Williams doesn’t want you to call it a comeback.

Following reports that Serena Williams, age 44, had rejoined the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s drug testing program three years after retiring, she clarified whether this signaled a comeback to professional tennis.

“Omg yall,” Serena wrote on a Dec. 2 post on X. “I’m NOT coming back. This wildfire is crazy.”

Serena Williams, mother to 8-year-old Olympia and 2-year-old Adira with her husband Alexis Ohanian, didn’t say why she signed up with the organization.

According to ITIA spokesperson Adrian Bassett, the athlete has requested to be added back into the drug testing pool. He clarified to The Athletic that this doesn’t necessarily mean she’s planning a return to competition, but simply keeps her options open. He stated, “She’s back in the pool.”

After a six-month period following her reinstatement, Serena would be able to play again if she passes random drug tests.

Serena Williams played her last professional match in 2022, losing to Ajla Tomljanovi at the US Open. She recently discussed her decision to retire after 27 years, and how she’s been exploring who she is beyond tennis and being a mother.

Serena recently shared in an interview that she’s focused on rediscovering herself and building confidence in her choices. She emphasized the importance of prioritizing one’s own life, not just living for one’s children, and feeling secure in the decisions she’s made.

Stepping away from tennis allowed Serena to feel more comfortable with her body, after years of facing public scrutiny and comments about her appearance.

Serena explained that retiring from tennis has been emotionally challenging. She realized that after years of focusing on strength and athleticism, she now looks back and appreciates how fit she used to be. She acknowledges she didn’t fit the typical mold of other female athletes, but understands that everyone’s body is different.

She explained it was challenging early in her career because her physique was different from most other athletes. She had a more curvaceous figure, while they tended to be very lean and slender.
