Even though many fans love it, Ted won’t be getting a third season. Variety reports that Seth MacFarlane, the show’s creator, said Peacock and Universal think it costs too much to make another season.
According to MacFarlane, the show’s production costs are very high and can’t be reduced. He’s also unaware of any current plans for a third season.

When it premiered in January 2024, the show became Peacock’s most popular original title ever, according to Variety. However, The Wrap reports that Peacock hasn’t yet decided if it will renew the show for a third season. Universal has not commented on the matter when contacted by Variety.
Background on the Franchise
The Ted series started with the 2012 comedy film directed by and starring Seth MacFarlane, who also provided the voice for the talking teddy bear. The movie, featuring Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis, was a huge hit and helped make MacFarlane a prominent comedic figure beyond animated shows. A follow-up film in 2015 continued the story of John and his foul-mouthed teddy bear.
The TV series Ted takes place in the early 1990s and tells the story leading up to the events of the movies. Max Burkholder stars as a young John Bennett – the same character Mark Wahlberg plays in the films. Seth MacFarlane once again provides the voice for Ted.

MacFarlane explained that making the show was incredibly demanding, saying the weekly workload felt impossible. He credited the crew with successfully managing a very complex production schedule. He compared the effort to creating an Avengers movie every 22 minutes, due to the extensive CGI needed not just to animate the bear, but to create believable bear performances. He believes their experience making two Ted films a decade earlier was essential to their success.
Despite the complex visual effects, performance capture, and editing needed, Peacock is still planning more content featuring Ted in the future, though creating a third season could be challenging.
Future of the Series
Peacock announced back in May that they’re creating an animated series based on the movie Ted, picking up the story after the second film. While the specifics of the plot are still under wraps, Seth MacFarlane will once again voice Ted. Mark Wahlberg, Amanda Seyfried, and Jessica Barth are also returning to voice their characters from the films: John, Sam, and Tami-Lynn.
The future of the Ted series is still up in the air, but the show has clearly lasted a long time. Creator Seth MacFarlane recently told The Wrap that he intentionally created a difficult situation at the end of Season 2. He believes he could resolve it, however, if the show is renewed for a third season. “You can always find a solution,” he said, “but right now, it would take some clever writing.”

I’ve been a fan of Ted since the first movie came out in 2012, and it’s awesome how popular he’s stayed! We’ve already gotten a sequel and a really successful show on streaming. I’ve even heard they’re working on an animated project, so even if the Peacock series doesn’t get another season, it seems like Ted’s story isn’t over yet. Like everyone else, I guess I’ll just have to wait and see what happens next with the franchise.
