Severance: Ben Stiller Reveals Why He’s Not Directing Season 3

Since the official announcement of the renewal for Severance‘s third season back in March, there has been an exciting update regarding its upcoming episodes. Notably, executive producer Ben Stiller will not be directing Season 3, marking the first time since the show’s debut in 2022. This decision follows Stiller’s recent Emmy nominations for his exceptional work on the previous season, including recognition for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series.

Why isn’t Ben Stiller directing Severance Season 3?

During a recent conversation with the Los Angeles Times, it emerged that Ben Stiller will not be directing Severance Season 3 as he intends to concentrate on helming a World War II survival film. This project, yet unnamed, is scheduled to commence filming this spring, marking Stiller’s return to feature directing after almost a decade since his last directional venture with Zoolander 2.

Additionally, Stiller further explained his role in Season 3, disclosing that he continues to be a part of the series in an executive producer capacity. He promised fans that he’ll have the opportunity to direct the show once more in forthcoming seasons.

Absolutely! For the past eight months, I’ve been completely engrossed in working on Season 3, and I’m more committed than ever. On X, Stiller expressed his excitement by saying, “We have some fantastic directors and a team that truly brings our show to life.” I thoroughly enjoy directing it, and I can’t wait to get back to it at some point in the future. I have this strong feeling that Season 3 is going to be our best one yet as we continue to develop and grow.

The workplace thriller series was developed and penned by Dan Erickson, who also assumes the role of executive producer, joined by Stiller and main actor Adam Scott. This season brings back familiar faces like Britt Lower, Tramell Tillman, Zach Cherry, Jen Tullock, Michael Chernus, Dichen Lachman, John Turturro, Christopher Walken, and Patricia Arquette. Additionally, the cast welcomes new members such as Sarah Bock, Bob Balaban, Robby Benson, Stefano Carannante, Gwendoline Christie, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, John Noble, Alia Shawkat, and Merritt Wever.
