Severance Season 3 Can Take Longer Than Fans Hoped (Will It Be Three Years?)

The eagerly awaited third season of “Severance” might take longer to arrive than fans initially anticipated. After receiving an unprecedented 27 Emmy nominations for its second season, Apple TV+’s head of programming Matt Cherniss provided an update on the show’s return in Variety, hinting that viewers should prepare themselves for a prolonged wait. The second season of “Severance” ended in March 2025, exploring further the tale of Mark S., played by Adam Scott, and his colleagues as their uprising against Lumon Industries escalated. The season broadened the series’ narrative and provided solutions to several lingering questions, while setting the stage for a thrilling continuation. It also came over three years after Season 1, a delay attributed to labor strikes and production complications in the industry. At this point, there is no confirmed start date for Season 3, which suggests another extended hiatus may be on the horizon.

Cherniss acknowledged that another three-year wait isn’t desired. “As of now, we don’t have a confirmed production start date,” he said, “but we’re progressing towards it. I share the same eagerness with everyone else to see what happens next in the series. Although I might have some ideas about its direction, I enjoy being surprised just like anyone else.

With an abundance of excitement, there’s also a strong sense of prudence present. As Cherniss put it, everyone will likely take a moment to savor the current situation, given the show’s record-breaking Emmy victories. They’re working as swiftly as possible. When a series achieves the level of success that Severance has, it’s crucial to ensure every aspect is top-notch when the show returns, and that requires time. However, they’re fully committed, and I have a strong feeling that we’re on the right track.

Severance Leads the Charge in Apple TV+ Record-Breaking Emmys Nominations

With this, Severance becomes the most-nominated series of the year and a significant triumph for Apple’s premium drama library.

Cherniss expressed delight, saying, “It’s wonderful for our service. I’m particularly joyful about the talent involved in creating these exceptional series. It requires courage from each of them to choose where to present their shows, and I’m overjoyed that they’re reaping the benefits of trusting us as a platform for their dedication.

Apple’s triumph didn’t stop at “Severance”.
