Sex Education star’s “subversive” and “bold” new film gets UK streaming release date

The movie titled “Hot Milk,” featuring Emma Mackey, Fiona Shaw, and Vicky Krieps, that hit theaters at the beginning of this month, now has its streaming release date announced – not much longer to go!

The movie, described as a “sly, rebellious story of growing up” by The Independent and “daring, minimalistic, vibrant, and gritty” by the Financial Times, is set to premiere on MUBI on 22nd August 2025.

In a new directorial venture, BAFTA-nominated author Rebecca Lenkiewicz introduces “Hot Milk,” a story about Sofia (Mackey) and her ailing mother Rose (Shaw). They journey to the Spanish coastal town of Almería in search of Dr. Gómez (Vincent Perez), a mysterious healer, who might have the solution for Rose’s puzzling sickness.

The summary for the movie indicates that a deep-seated tension exists between Sofia and Ingrid (played by Krieps), who is captivatingly spontaneous. Sofia feels inexplicably attracted towards her.

Yet, under the scorching sun, Sofia’s increasing autonomy and yearning for liberty start overwhelming her overprotective mother. This, in turn, stirs doubts within her about the real condition of Rose’s ailment.

“Secrets, lies and revelations emerge, leading Sofia to doors that might be best left unopened.”

During a chat with TopMob before the movie’s premiere in cinemas, Lenkiewicz acknowledged that “some viewers are quite upset by the ending,” explaining that “they yearn for clarity, but the majority appreciate the vagueness – and they enjoy discussing their interpretations of it.

She mentioned: “I clearly stated my preference for a brief, dimly lit screen display prior to the credits rolling. This period allows viewers to reflect on the movie and in a way, reconnect with it. I believe the conclusion is optimistic, though interpretations may vary among individuals.

While Shaw stated, “I hadn’t known how it would conclude from the script, Rebecca was shaping it as she progressed.

In the book, things are surprisingly distinct. Moreover, I believe the conclusion is exceptionally powerful; it left me utterly stunned when I witnessed it!
