Sheinelle Jones is feeling the love.
Celebrating her first birthday since the passing of her husband, Uche Ojeh, who died of brain cancer last May, Jenna (co-host of Jenna & Sheinelle) openly discussed the difficult emotions she experienced.
Sheinelle shared on Instagram that today is her 48th birthday, and she’s been crying throughout the day. She’s currently on tour promoting her new book, Through Mom’s Eyes, and wrote the post while traveling. These tears are a mix of gratitude and sadness, as it’s her first birthday since losing her husband, Uche. She says the past week has been filled with more love than she’s ever experienced.
The post included a photo carousel showing Sheinelle enjoying her tour, with pictures of her happily speaking to large audiences at different events.
She continued, expressing her gratitude for everyone’s prayers and support over the past year. She was overwhelmed by the incredible response, saying she couldn’t describe how amazing it felt to perform for sold-out crowds in every city, and to see everyone’s happy faces in the group photos.
Sheinelle, a mom to 16-year-old Kayin, and 13-year-old twins Clara and Uche Jr., also took time to remember her late husband.
I recently received the sweetest message from someone named Uche. She shared that she’s a big Beatles fan – a band that always brightens my day too! – and as she starts a new chapter in her life, turning 48, she said she’s truly feeling optimistic and grateful. It just warmed my heart and reminded me how the simple things – like good music and a positive outlook – can make all the difference. It’s a beautiful reminder to appreciate those little moments of joy!

Ever since Uche passed away at 45, Sheinelle has openly shared the challenges and emotions she’s experienced while grieving.
She explained to People magazine that people often assume she’s doing well when they see her on television. However, she insists that’s not the case, saying, ‘It feels like I’m struggling every single day, like trying to swim through mud.’
It’s incredibly hard to manage everyday tasks – like getting ready in the morning, going to work, or taking care of family – when you’re grieving,” the journalist explained. “I had to actively work at balancing my sadness with moments of happiness. I’ve realized I can feel both grief and joy at the same time, and I’m determined to embrace that happiness, even now.

She’s especially happy about the release of her book, which offers straightforward advice from mothers who successfully raised remarkable children.
Her children joined the celebration and surprised her with flowers and heartfelt messages while she was on the fourth hour of Today on April 14th.
Her oldest son, Kayin, was overjoyed, saying, ‘I can’t even put into words how happy I am for you, Mom. You’ve been working on this since the start of the pandemic, and we’ve been through a lot together.’
“We’ve obviously gone through so much,” he added, “and I’m so happy for you.”

Sheinelle Jones frequently shared the story of how she first met her husband, Uche Ojeh. She was 19 years old and giving him a tour of the Northwestern University campus when they connected.
As Savannah Guthrie mentioned on Today’s May 23rd tribute, he was a truly remarkable man and Sheinelle’s ideal life partner.

As someone who follows families and how they navigate life’s challenges, I was so touched by Uche’s strength throughout his battle with glioblastoma. What really stood out was how important his faith and Nigerian heritage were to him. His wife, Sheinelle, shared a beautiful story from 2021 – all three of their children wore traditional Nigerian clothing for their baptism, and it was a powerful display of their family’s pride and roots. It just speaks volumes about the values they cherished.

As the father of kids Kayin, and younger twins Clara and Uche Jr., Uche put his family first.
Craig Melvin shared in a tribute on Today that the man loved his children more than anything. He was incredibly proud and always there for them – at every soccer game, concert, and recital. He was a very involved and supportive father.

On today’s show, Al Roker shared that Uche, though quiet, had a wonderfully sharp wit and was a very humble person.

In a 2021 birthday post dedicated to Uche, Sheinelle shared that her late husband had always been her steadfast support.
She shared on Instagram that whenever she searches for his picture on her iPhone, almost all the results show him with her – either by her side or helping their kids with activities like homework, music, or sports. She expressed deep gratitude for sharing her life with him.

During a segment on Today, Savannah Guthrie highlighted that Sheinelle Jones and her husband, Uche, successfully navigated challenges like distance to build their relationship. Sheinelle herself expressed that it was all worthwhile, recalling in a 2022 post that she was first captivated by Uche when she was 19, and now, years later, they are still together.

During their most challenging time, Savannah praised Sheinelle and Uche, calling them both strong and resilient fighters.
Savannah highlighted that Uche was a wonderful person whose positive attitude and inner resilience perfectly balanced Sheinelle’s personality.

After the announcement of Uche’s passing, Sheinelle expressed her gratitude for everyone’s kindness and support.
