Sheridan Smith joins Hollywood stars and pop icons for new girl band movie

Rebel Wilson is adding Sheridan Smith to the cast of her new comedy, *Girl Group*. Wilson wrote, directed, and produced the film, and will also star in it. This project is Wilson’s second time directing a feature film, following 2024’s *The Deb*.

Although “The Deb” was based on a stage musical, “Girl Group” will tell a brand new story. It’s about a pop star (Wilson) who gets kicked off her old girl group’s reunion tour. To revive her career, she decides to coach a team of unlikely candidates – a group of people doing community service – for a chance to audition with a record label.

Rebel Wilson is known for starring in feel-good movies about singing competitions, like *Pitch Perfect*, and this film has been in the works for a few years. It was originally called *Seoul Girls* when first announced in 2019.

The story was initially about a Korean-American high schooler trying to make it with her band, as first reported by Deadline, but the idea has since been revised.

The movie will explore the harmful side of the music business while sharing the spotlight between the rising new group and Wilson’s character, a seasoned singer dealing with her own personal challenges.

In addition to Wilson and Smith, several well-known personalities are joining the cast, such as Randall Park, Jamie Lee O’Donnell, Guz Khan, Ashley Roberts from the Pussycat Dolls, Mel C from the Spice Girls, and Shaznay Lewis from All Saints.

Mel C, Roberts, Lewis, and Wilson will play a fictional girl group called Girlfriends, and their combined acting experience should make the band feel authentic.

The band formed by Wilson’s character is still keeping its members’ names a secret. However, a nationwide search was held across the US to find the young actors who will play them.

Anna Kendrick, known for her work in the *Pitch Perfect* movies, is now directing a new film called *Girl Group*. She explains that it will recapture some of the energy and feel of the *Pitch Perfect* franchise, and the similar title is a nod to that connection.

I’ve always dreamed of making a movie like *Pitch Perfect*, and *Girl Group* is exactly that – a really fun, energetic film that will have you singing and dancing. It’s the perfect celebration of girl power!

Live Nation Studios, the team behind the critically acclaimed film *A Star Is Born* starring Bradley Cooper and the David Bowie documentary *Moonage Daydream*, is producing this movie.
