Sheridan Smith shared a story about how Dame Maggie Smith mentored her on the set of the film Quartet.
As a total movie fan, I recently checked out ‘Quartet.’ It’s based on a play, and it’s a really charming story about life at Beecham House, this fancy retirement home where all the residents are former musicians and opera singers. It’s a peek into their world, and honestly, it’s delightful.
The beloved late actress appears as a resident of Beecham House, joining stars like Billy Connolly, Tom Courtenay, and Pauline Collins. Meanwhile, Sheridan Smith portrays the house’s doctor, Lucy Cogan.
Sheridan Smith recently appeared on The One Show to talk about her upcoming role in a new production of Alan Ayckbourn’s ‘Woman in Mind.’ During the interview, she shared how Dame Maggie Smith had been a guiding figure in her career.
I worked with her on a movie called Quartet, and I was incredibly nervous because Dustin Hoffman was directing. I was a wreck! Being surrounded by so many acting legends, I felt completely out of my element. She noticed I was starting to panic before one scene and playfully said, ‘We actors have to support each other!’

Sheridan Smith will play Susan in ‘Woman in Mind,’ a play coming to London’s Duke of York’s Theatre from December 9th to February 28th. The story centers on Susan, whose life is fractured after a head injury causes her to experience two separate realities.
Joining the cast alongside Smith are Louise Brealey, Tim McMullan, Sule Rimi, Chris Jenks, Safia Oakley-Green, Taylor Uttley, Katie Buchholz, Michael Woolfitt, and Romesh Ranganathan. Ranganathan will play the role of Bill’s doctor, Susan.
Sheridan shared that working with Romesh Ranganathan on his acting debut was great. They have a friendly, casual relationship – they even call each other ‘my G’! Romesh seemed to handle the experience really well, especially considering his experience performing in large venues. Sheridan added that he’s actually learning from Romesh as well.
She described him as a lot of fun, explaining that they both enjoy hip-hop and will likely be joking and laughing about it backstage. She added that he’s a wonderful person to be around and the show is fantastic.
