Despite continued enthusiasm from fans for another film starring Robert Downey Jr as Sherlock Holmes, actor Eddie Marsan has offered a pessimistic outlook on the possibility of a third movie. Marsan, known for his role as Inspector Lestrade in the popular film series, recently stated in an interview that he doesn’t believe Sherlock Holmes 3 will likely ever be made.
Eddie Marsan isn’t sure Sherlock Holmes 3 will happen after two Avengers movies
In a conversation with ScreenRant’s Grant Hermanns regarding his new film, All the Devils Are Here, Marsan voiced his concerns that Sherlock Holmes 3 might never be finished, citing ongoing and repeated delays in its development.
“Every year, I hear that they’re going to do it, they’re going to do it, they’re going to do it, and it never happens,” the English actor noted before adding, “I don’t know. I don’t know if it’s ever going to happen.”
I was really interested to hear what Marsan had to say about Sherlock Holmes 3, especially after Susan Downey – the producer of both the 2009 and 2011 films – revealed they’d gotten quite far with it at one point. She explained in an interview with Collider that they were actively trying to make the third movie happen before the COVID-19 pandemic stopped everything. Apparently, the timing just didn’t work out because they couldn’t get it filmed before Jude [Law] became busy with other commitments. It’s a shame, but hopefully, we’ll still see it someday!
Downey also revealed a few details about the movie’s storyline, mentioning that Sherlock Holmes 3 has “always been planned to take place in America.”
Directed by Guy Ritchie, the initial Sherlock Holmes film was released in 2009, and the follow-up, A Game of Shadows, arrived in theaters in 2011. Since then, we haven’t received many-if any-official announcements about a third movie. Considering Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2026 with Avengers: Doomsday, and then Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027, the chances of Sherlock Holmes 3 happening seem slim, as of now.
