Initially, people pondered over the blend of the innocent Abbott Elementary school series with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s NSFW and at times uncomfortable humor. Yet, the 2025 TV lineup confirmed it as an unmissable crossover event. The second part is now approaching, and we can expect to witness a more mature version of the Abbott cast in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia during Season 17’s premiere. Although I’m certain it will be amusing, what makes it even funnier is how Sheryl Lee Ralph reworked Barbara Howard’s lines to exclude any profanity.
Ahead of the July 9 premiere on this episode, Day made an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”. During their chat, they discussed the highly anticipated crossover and hinted at what viewers can look forward to from the Philadelphia-based series’ collaborative efforts. The actor from “Horrible Bosses” revealed that jokes were sharpened for the “Abbott” cast on his show, with Ralph being the amusing exception who chose to insert something slightly less explicit, as he put it.
In a different wording: We scripted them some lines that were significantly more daring than their roles on ABC. Among all, Sheryl Lee Ralph seemed hesitant, expressing doubts. However, she improvised the phrase “sugar honey iced tea,” and upon examining each letter, it’s clear what she meant. Spontaneously, she thought of that, and I responded, ‘That’s great! Let’s stick with sugar honey iced tea.’
In my opinion, it seems like a perfect casting choice for several reasons. Mrs. Howard’s character appears to be quite reserved, and given her religious background, it’s unlikely she would use explicit language like “shit.” Therefore, Ralph, who can deliver such a role with panache, seems an ideal fit. Furthermore, just as Mrs. Howard inspired the famous celebrity confusion skit, Ralph’s talent could bring that bit to life in a captivating manner.
From what I gather from the short summary in TV Guide, it seems plausible that she might spontaneously utter a curse word during the scene where Ava is examining the surveillance footage following The Gang’s disruptive volunteer stint.
With Sunny’s upcoming changes in faculty and staff behavior, Day mentioned that not all individuals found the new language problematic. He thinks Quinta Brunson embraced colloquial slang often referred to as ‘trash talk’ and enjoyed pushing boundaries with Janine, as expressed by him:
1. It seems she was genuinely excited about doing it.
2. I believe they were rather confined within the boundaries of network television. (More formal, but still clear and easy to read.)

I’m excited to discover a fresh aspect of the Abbott characters in Sunny. What’s more, I’m thrilled about witnessing their responses towards the adult-themed gang too.
Gaining understanding into just how authentic Barbara is and how much strain Janine might experience piques my curiosity even more about watching these shows. Since they’re both considered among the greatest sitcoms ever (and you can stream them with a Hulu subscription), and we’ve already glimpsed the initial episode featuring Frank, Dee, Charlie, Mac, and Dennis in an elementary school, I am eagerly anticipating observing the Abbott family outside of work.
What secrets lie on those tapes, Ava is set to examine? I can’t say for certain, but I suspect it will be a whirlwind of mayhem and vulgarity that The Gang is infamous for. Here’s hoping we avoid any unpleasant scenarios like the notorious turd soup incident.
