The BBC has confirmed that Shetland will return for an 11th season.
BBC Scotland announced the news on their Facebook page, but they’re not revealing any details about the story or who will be starring in it just yet.
I was really shocked in the season 10 finale when Sergeant Billy McCabe turned himself in to internal affairs. Apparently, he was taking responsibility for some errors he’d made two decades ago, and now I’m just wondering if we’ll ever see him on the show again. It’s a tough situation, and I’m anxious to find out what happens next.
We anticipate Alison O’Donnell will reprise her role as ‘Tosh’, with Ashley Jensen returning as DI Ruth Calder and Steven Robertson as DC Sandy Wilson. The new season will also feature a host of new actors playing guest roles as another mystery unfolds.
Samuel Anderson, known for his work in Amandaland, became part of the show in season 10, playing the role of Matt Blake, the new local prosecutor.

When the possibility of changing the show’s direction came up, it made me realize there was still potential for growth. I think that was a good assessment – there was enough existing material that we could build upon and reimagine the whole thing.
O’Donnell explained that having Calder join the show attracted new viewers. She said it felt like many people were discovering the show for the first time, and some even started watching from the very beginning after seeing season eight. Overall, she believes Calder’s appearance revitalized interest in the series.
O’Donnell recently shared in an interview that the reboot exceeded everyone’s expectations, turning out far better than anticipated.
I’ll never forget watching the first episode of season eight. My kids were still awake, so I slipped into another room to watch it, and honestly, I burst into tears. It was such a relief after everything, but mostly I was just incredibly proud of what they’d accomplished. I just sat there and wept, it was a really emotional moment.
I expected some disagreement, and honestly, there wasn’t nearly as much as I thought there might be.
And it’s showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon, with the crime drama set to return in 2026.

As a huge fan of TV, I’ve been following Abby Robinson’s work for a while now. She’s the Drama Editor over at TopMob, where she writes about all the latest dramas and comedies. Before that, she was a TV writer at Digital Spy and also did some writing for Mumsnet. She clearly knows her stuff – she’s got a degree and a postgraduate diploma in English Studies, so she’s got a solid background in storytelling and writing.
