The first episode of Season 2 included guest stars who had appeared in two of Tim Allen’s earlier, popular TV comedies. But according to showrunner Michelle Nader, the upcoming episodes will offer much more to viewers. She promises a lot more is on the way.
In an interview with TV Line, Nader revealed that Matt Parker (Allen) will face a significant challenge over the next 12 episodes. His daughter, Riley (Kat Dennings), will expand her horizons, moving beyond helping out in her dad’s garage and her work at the dance studio owned by Eve Drake (Jenna Elfman). Viewers can also anticipate seeing more of Eve, as she’s scheduled to have her first official date with Matt in the October 8th episode.
Nader explained that Elfman’s Eve isn’t a consistent character right now. “We’re aiming to feature her in most of Season 2,” he said, “and we have some major episodes planned with her, including our Halloween and Christmas specials.” He expressed his fondness for these types of episodes, saying, “I really enjoy doing those classic-style stories. That’s a big part of what we all love about this genre, isn’t it? Remembering those big holiday episodes from our childhood.”
As a big fan of the show, I found what Nader shared about Riley’s arc really interesting. He explained that this season is all about her growing up. She can’t keep acting like the angsty teen who impulsively married Jimmy anymore. Apparently, Riley’s going to start figuring out her career path, and Matt will definitely have some thoughts about what that should be! It sounds like whatever she chooses will tie into her passions and keep her connected to the garage. He hinted it’s going to be a major reveal, which has me so excited to see what happens!
Plus, Riley’s son, Carter (Maxwell Simkin), is about to reach a big moment that his grandfather will be thrilled about. “Carter’s going to start driving,” Nader explained. “There’s a humorous storyline where Carter gets his driver’s license and Matt finds out *his* has expired without realizing it.” Viewers will also see a story unfold with Stitch (Daryl Mitchell) and someone from his history.
Tim Allen Has Another Project in The Works
According to an official description, the show, created by Julie Thacker Scully and Mike Scully, centers around Matt Parker, a determined car shop owner who is a widower. The story kicks off when his long-lost daughter, Riley, arrives with her teenage children and moves in with him – and that’s when the *real* work begins. The show’s cast features Maxwell Simkins, Barrett Margolis, and Sean William Scott.
Elsewhere, Allen has been hyping the upcoming . The actor recently shared some new details about the plot. “It’s such a great story. I can only tell a little bit of it,” he said. “It’s a Jessie story, Tom [Hanks] and I have to reunite, and there’s just the funniest thing, because there’s a whole bunch of Buzzes involved. And there’s a reason why there’s a whole bunch of me, so there’s 100 of me in a separate story, and I’m having so much fun.”
New episodes of Shifting Gears Season 2 air Wednesdays on ABC.
