Shinigami Hime to Ishokan no Kaibutsu ‘Concept’ trailer; abilities detailed

Nippon Ichi Software has revealed a new trailer showcasing the core idea behind their upcoming adventure game, Shinigami Hime to Ishokan no Kaibutsu. They also shared details and screenshots highlighting what the main characters, Mel and Mono, can do.

Here is the new trailer:

And here are the latest details:

■ Mel’s Ability: “Book Burn”

Mel’s “Book Burn” ability lets her create flames, which she can use to destroy tough, spiky barriers and make her way forward, or to brightly illuminate a space like a powerful light.

—By burning away thorns, you can move forward even through blocked areas.

In the world of “Spider Kingdom,” everything is covered in webs, and many of these webs can be burned away. In tight spaces where it’s hard to move, burning the webs behind you can create paths for escape and help you get around more easily.

I’m really excited about Book Burn, but I’ve learned it’s super powerful, so it needs something called “Scraps of Paper” to actually use it. You find those scraps inside the book worlds themselves, so you’ve gotta manage them carefully or you’ll be stuck!

—Try burning the background and enemies!

—What happens if you use Book Burn on a character with a candle tail…?

■ Mel’s Ability: “Paper Fly”

With “Paper Fly,” Mel gains the ability to lift and float objects, letting you overcome gaps and obstacles that are too high or far for Mel to reach on their own.

—Mel catches Mono with a firm gasp! You can even cross large gaps.

In the colorful world of “Unfinished Canvas,” Mel faces tricky challenges she can’t simply overcome with force, like floors covered in thorns.

That’s when “Paper Fly” comes in handy!

Throughout this world, you’ll encounter clown-like enemies that turn the painted floors dangerous with thorns. Use Paper Fly to safely navigate around these thorns and then defeat the enemies as you progress.

Notice the color inside the clown’s speech bubble, and then see if the floor changes.

■ Mono’s Ability: “Retouch”

Mono now has a new ability called “Retouch” that lets you easily fix and restore broken or damaged objects and environments.

—Even a messy drawing on the wall can become a door with Retouch.

If you find areas blocked by debris, use Mono’s “Retouch” tool to clear the way and continue!

■ Which Abilities You Can Use Depend on Your Size!?

The more Mel eats, the more power he regains, and the bigger and more ferocious he becomes.

Growing larger lets Mel eat more kinds of food, but becoming too big will cause him to lose some of the powers he has when he’s his normal size.

—If Mel gets too big, he can still use Book Burn, but he cannot use Paper Fly.

Furthermore, if Mel continues eating paper, he will transform into a wild, four-legged beast!

When he transforms, his strength is at its peak, but he loses control and can only eat paper. He also can’t understand what Mono says and moves erratically.

If this happens, your only choice is to “Redo” before Mono’s steadily decreasing stamina runs out.

As I’m playing through the game, I’m really learning that it’s important to think about which of Mel’s forms will work best for each different storybook world. It’s all about picking the right Mel for the situation!

—In this form, attacks are nothing to be afraid of!

The game Shinigami Hime to Ishokan no Kaibutsu will be released in Japan on April 30th for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch.
