As I sat down to watch another episode of Strictly Come Dancing, I felt like I was transported backstage at the iconic Blackpool Tower Ballroom. With over 40 years of dance experience under my belt, it’s no wonder that Shirley Ballas has become the head judge we all know and love.
As the final episode of Strictly Come Dancing nears, TopMob magazine sits down for a chat with lead judge Shirley Ballas, discussing her most cherished memories, words of wisdom from behind the scenes, and any possibility of her departing from the show.
Has there been some discussion about the judges arguing this season? I’m curious, what’s the genuine vibe among the four of you?
For nearly four decades, I’ve been acquainted with Anton, and Motsi for around three. Since joining this program, I’ve also developed a strong bond with Craig, lasting eight years. Our interactions are always so lively and enjoyable.
Do you have favourite celebrities from the start?
Initially, as they descend the staircase, it occasionally crosses my mind, “That individual doesn’t seem very coordinated.” However, I once had similar thoughts about Bill Bailey, who later proved me wrong by winning, so perhaps I shouldn’t jump to conclusions!
What have been your favourite moments on the show?
In Week 1, watching Kelvin Fletcher dance the samba almost made my eyes pop out! As for Giovanni and Rose Ayling-Ellis, when she turned off the music and immersed us in her world, it was truly captivating.
Do your critiques vary depending on how robust a celebrity seems?
I possess a variety of hats, including a technical hat, an empathetic hat, and a comforting “snuggle-bunny” hat. I switch between them depending on the situation. Essentially, I’m adaptable – I might initially plan to say something specific, but if I notice someone is struggling or has made errors, I adjust my approach. I aim to offer praise for their accomplishments while also acknowledging their mistakes, providing encouragement where needed. In other words, I can sense the atmosphere and act accordingly.
Do the producers ever tell you to go easy on somebody that’s having a hard week?
I don’t have anybody telling me what I can and cannot say. We have no earpieces. Nobody’s told what to say.
Do you ever give the contestants advice backstage?
I head downstairs moments before we’re set to start, and the atmosphere is electric with excitement. There’s such a great sense of teamwork. As I walk by, I tell them, “Give your best and savor every moment, for it will become cherished memories tomorrow. Enjoy yourself and don’t fret over any mistakes.
As head judge, do you feel the pressure of having the final vote on who goes home?
On weekends, I find myself often wishing, “Heavenly figure guiding me, may others take on this responsibility, sparing me the burden.” Yet, someone needs to fulfill this duty, and I strive to send them off with as much reassurance and warmth as possible.
It saddens me a bit to watch them leave, as I’ve grown fond of them and witnessed their progress.
What would it take for you to leave the show?
I want to do Strictly until I pop my clogs. I shall come in on my walking frame, because I’m married to dance!

Strictly Come Dancing continues Saturdays on BBC One and iPlayer.
