The upcoming movie, *Avengers: Doomsday*, is set to be Marvel Studios’ biggest and most ambitious project yet, and the studio is counting on it to be a huge success. The film will bring together almost all of Marvel’s heroes – including the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and characters from the X-Men films – to fight a common enemy: Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr. With so many powerful heroes on one side, it’s hard to imagine anyone being able to defeat them. However, a new rumor suggests that Doctor Doom won’t be facing them alone. He’s reportedly planning to use an entire army, originally created to fight one of the hero teams, to even the odds.
According to James Mack, a VFX artist who claims to have worked in Hollywood, Doctor Doom will take over the Sentinel program from the X-Men. He suggests Doom will use runes to control the Sentinels – the machines originally designed to hunt mutants – and turn them into his own personal army. Mack says concept art shows the Sentinels covered in green runes, which supports leaked photos of a damaged Sentinel at the X-Mansion. However, since concept art isn’t usually public and the movie’s script was still being developed during filming, these details should be considered unconfirmed.
Doom will be able to take control of machines and robots using runes, including the Sentinels from the X-universe. Concept art reveals these Sentinels will be marked with glowing green runes!

If the information Mack provided about the Sentinels turns out to be true, it would support the other positive news he’s shared with fans. He says Famke Janssen and Halle Berry are likely to return as Jean Grey and Storm, respectively. While Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen are already confirmed to be back from the original X-Men films, many fans were disappointed by Janssen and Berry’s absence. Their possible return would mean seeing the main cast members of the original movies reunited for this huge, universe-spanning event.
Doctor Doom Controlling the Sentinels Is a Perfect Display of Power
Doctor Doom is a legendary comic book villain, known for his incredible intelligence, drive, and power, making him a danger to the entire universe. However, previous attempts to bring him to the big screen in the *Fantastic Four* movies from 2005 and 2015 didn’t quite capture what makes him so compelling. Those films mostly showed him as a business competitor or a scientist changed by an accident, highlighting powers like controlling electricity or moving things with his mind. What they missed was a key part of his character from the comics: his skill in magic. In the original stories, Victor von Doom isn’t just a brilliant scientist like Reed Richards; he’s also a powerful sorcerer, second only to Doctor Strange in magical ability. This combination of science and magic is what truly makes him a unique and terrifying villain, and it’s something earlier films didn’t explore.
The idea of Doom commanding an army of Sentinels through magical runes is a great way for the Marvel Cinematic Universe to create a Doctor Doom that truly feels like he stepped out of the comics. This not only explains how he could battle so many heroes simultaneously, but it also captures the full depth of his character. It would firmly establish the MCU’s Doctor Doom as a unique and frightening combination of technology and magic – a fitting portrayal of Marvel’s most iconic villain.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
