As a devoted fan, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the next chapter of Downton Abbey, but alas, I’ve come to terms with the fact that Matthew Goode’s charming character, Henry Talbot, won’t grace our screens in the upcoming third and final film. The recently unveiled trailer has shed some light on this absence, offering a glimpse into why we won’t see him in the storyline.
In an exciting sequence of the preview, Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) attends a grand ball. Suddenly, a newly introduced character, portrayed by Joely Richardson, urgently approaches her and insists she needs to depart right away.
She declares that her marriage has ended in divorce, causing quite a surprise among the others present.
“I’m very sorry,” Mary responds. “I shouldn’t have come.”

A significant portion of the remaining trailer depicts different characters responding to the announcement of the divorce. At one point, Daisy Parker (played by Sophie McShera), expresses her shock by saying, “Tonight truly feels like the event that rocked the world.
At the same time, we catch a peek at several actors joining the ensemble – among them is the charming Alessandro Nivola portraying a new character, while Paul Giamatti reprises his role as Harold Levinson, last seen in the 2013 holiday episode.
Below, you’ll find the complete trailer. It undeniably hints at an epic finale for this ongoing storyline.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I can tell you that Goode, who was notably absent from the sequel, shared with TopMob magazine his thoughts on not returning to his character, Henry, in the movie. He considered it quite likely a smart move.
He shared: “During the second time slot, I was engaged in The Offer. For the third, I was filming Netflix’s Dept. Q. However, I also injured my knee and required surgery.
It would have taken me several weeks to recover from that, making it an impossible task for me. To be honest, he was starting to seem rather spineless. Perhaps it’s for the best then.
In a subsequent interview with Metro, I explained that my earlier remarks were not intended to be offensive or disrespectful.
He suggested that it could make for a more intriguing storyline if Lady Mary were independent, not relying on a man. Some viewers might admire her as a contemporary feminist figure or symbol of modern feminism.

In the original Downton Abbey TV show, Goode appeared in seasons 5 and 6. Later, he was featured in the movie adaptation released in 2019 as well.
Previously, it had been disclosed that his plan was to make an appearance in the final episode, however, this would’ve been limited to a brief scene, approximately half a page long, specifically during the sequence set at the racecourse, as hinted in the earlier previews of the movie.
He mentioned that he had an extended conversation with Michelle Dockery, who plays Lady Mary in the series, discussing potential ways the scene could play out. They intended to request minor script changes, but ultimately the production continued without his input.
